Hello Guys !

I am from New Delhi and recently got admission in Mumbai for post graduation.I was planning to take my car to Mumbai for 2 years(tenure of my stay). Can anyone please let me know if I can drive my car in Mumbai with DL No for the above mentioned period or I have to change my no to a MH registration. I am in a dilemma as Somebody told me that my car will be second owned if I change my registration in Mumbai. Is it true ?
Also can somebody let me know the procedure and documents required for the same plus the road tax ?

Thanks & Regards
Sushil

In terms of taking Car to Mumbai
w.r.t Query
Q Somebody told me that my car will be second owned if I change my registration in Mumbai. Is it true ?
A. No - its not true. If you get the car re-registered there - it was stay in as Owner Serial 1. Been ownership is not transferring - only vehicle would get re-registered in a different state.

Q. Also can somebody let me know the procedure and documents required for the same plus the road tax
A. First - only Euro IV cars are getting registered in Mumbai, so your car should either be 2010 make or later - as was then Euro Emission norms were modified. If its Euro IV compliant - You need to obtain in State Transfer NOC and get in re-registered in Mumbai. Refer this Post on Documents Checklist

In terms of Road Tax - its around 9% on Petrol, 11% on Diesel and 5% of CNG - subject to Value of Car been less than 10 Lakh, else higher slabs would be applicable. Road Tax would be done on Depreciated Value of the car - as assessed by Road Tax Officer. Do not miss to carry on - Original Invoice - would be easier to get valuation estimate from RTO Officer.

Thanks for your reply and I am too doing it from Navi Mumbai.

Also I would like to share that I had word with one of my known in Mumbai and she told me that there are two ways to take your car interstate.

1 ) - take the NOC from Delhi and deposit the same to Mumbai RTO and they wll issue a MH no . But in this case I have to again change it when I am back to Delhi.

2 ) In this case if we wish to use the Delhi no only then we just have to pay only the road tax of Maharashtra and they will issue a sticker so that you can drive your care interstate with no trouble.

I have i20 sports CNG fitted and seems there will br no issues in terms of vehicle taking there as it covers all the norms required to drive the car.

Would request you to let me know if I am correct and choose one of the options while I take my car.

Best Regards

@ Sushil

Your reference is correct in the info provided.

In 1st Choice - Looks bit cumbersome, to get NOC issued from Delhi, get car-registered in Mumbai, apply for refund of road tax (pro-rata basis) in Delhi. When you will again move in to Delhi - have to apply for same process of NOC and getting it re-registered in Delhi and apply for refund (pro-rata basis) of road tax paid in Mumbai.

In 2nd Choice - Looks Easy but Only drawback in bringing car to Mumbai without getting it registered is the amount of road tax - which would not be refunded - when you will take back car to delhi

Hope you will make a choice accordingly !!

@Admin,

the second choice seems to be better, I am in a very similar situation where in I want to take my car to Maharshtra for a couple of years. Would you know the process of going about the second option.

Thanks
