Looking for Hyundai Elite I20 - 4 tyres (front & rear) comes with 4 alloys - good but spare wheel tyre as Steel. The dealer quoting that all cars - Hyundai, Honda, Maruti, Toyota - all have spare tyre in steel wheel. Is it true

This is not acceptable - then why do car companies mention that Alloy Wheel as Standard - A Standard means all 4 tyre and spare tyre too should have allous

@ Naina

Yes - in most of the vehicles - Manufacturers do that - in name of alloys - they give
> 4 Alloy Wheel
> 1 Steel Wheel in name of spare tyre

However - they do generally quote it in there brochure the number of alloy wheel in there brochure
Post your query - we even did checked it personally - Hyundai has mentioned in Exterior - Diamond Cut Alloy Wheel (4 numbers)

But now - whether its a good practice to leave Spare wheel as Steel instead of alloy on cars worth 7 Lakh to 8 Lakh - the consumer has to well decide.

Sales consultant at dealership is more or less correct - as same happens across the board in Hatch & Mid Sedan Cars - so whether its Swift, Brio, Amaze, Polo to Honda City, VW Vento, Skoda Rapid, Maruti Ciaz - all have 4 alloy wheel and spare as steel one.

However - there are still exceptions. For Instance VW Polo GT - has even spare wheel as alloy wheel
Also - most of Executive Sedan Cars and Higher End Range - comes with all 5 alloys (including spare) as standard

Hope should help in !!

Central Motor vehicle rules Rule 138 (4) (a) says that " in case of vehicles other than motor cycles, a set of spare bulbs for headlamp and
fuses, and a spare wheel ready for use; " which means a spare wheel is not a gift of the manufacturer. It is a mandatory requirement. It is not an accessory or a cosmetic add on. which means Manufacturer cannot evade the responsibility stating that it is just a means which is given to move to a nearby service centre.

How can a car be fitted with wheels of different makes and material....Even the non uniformity of the tread wearing of tyres affects the performance and the roadworthiness of the vehicle. That is why tyres are rotated (tyre rotation), when service is performed. Here when a tyre rotation is done the spare wheel is usually fitted as a normal wheel and one of the normal wheel is stored as a spare wheel. This is to ensure the uniformity of the wear and tear of the tread of all the tyres used in the vehicle. The front tyres become back and back become front and the positions are interchanged to ensure the uniformity.

When a non alloy wheel of different material is mixed with 4 alloy wheels, it affects the equilibrium and rotation and one cannot predict what will be the repercussions when engaging hostile road conditions. So the lame excuse that the spare wheel is provided just to enable the Customer or the driver to reach the nearby service centre is not sustainable either in law or on facts. A spare wheel is not a gift or a broad minded largess of the Company. In India Alloy wheels are provided by the Company to higher models and the prices are dictated by the Companies.

The logic of forcing a steel tyre on the customer by tagging it along with the standard price of the vehicles is oppressive and is an unfair trade practice also.Hence an action under the Consumer protection act is also maintainable. In shorty the Companies should stop the practice of supplying a steel wheel as spare wheel along with the Vehicle and instead should comply with the mandatory requirement by providing an Alloy Wheel (in case the rest of the wheels are alloy made)

Hi,
I got Honda WRV Diesel car. The Honda website, brochure or manual just mentions "Alloy Wheels". But, my spare wheel is a "steel one". Please refer to below response, I got when I raised a grievance from HONDA.

******************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Dear Mr. Karunakaran,

Regards to your below communication, we understand a clarification on the matter has already been shared by our dealership.

We also wish to add that as a global practice spare wheel is used as an emergency wheel . Providing a steel wheel as a stepney is to visually remind you to get the damaged tyre repaired at the first opportunity.

We would also like to add that as a standard WRV comes with steel spare wheel and hence we regret our constraint to consider your request of any customization (provision of alloy wheel).

We seek your kind understanding on the above and assure you of our best services always.

Kind regards,

[b]Hello Shikha,
What kind of response is this? Is this even a bit logical? Dont you think this logic appears crazy!!!
So, Can I ask you one thing? Let's say, I got a Petrol Car which will be provided "Metal/Steel Wheel" by default as promised in catalogs. Then, Will Honda provide that car with a "Alloy Stepney Wheel" to visually remind me to get the damaged tyre repaired at the first opportunity?

Anyway, Thanks for this response. I am planning to take this with Consumer Forum and Social Media.

Be ready to respond the same way!!!

Regards,

Even I have Ciaz zxi + and the spare wheel is of steel. It might lead to vibration at high speed. This I came to know after one year while I was replacing the flat tyre.
This is really disgusting.
Will take with the dealer.

No need to do that there is a supreme court ruling in this regards when it ruled that a full alloy has to be provided when the car is equipped with
4 alloy wheels from the factory.
Seems all have forgotten that rule it is of 2006 or 7.

We just purchased a Dezire ZXi Automatic. When the sales people explaining about the car they said that Wheels are alloy. But once we received the car the stepney is not alloy and they are making a confirmation that the stepney is only for emergency and not for normal use so it comes in steel only. This is not right. Other wise the sales people should explain us before purchasing the car that the stepney won't be in alloy. This is really nonsense.

I have sent this email to Hyundai india let's see how they respond.

"Hi,
I was planning to buy Creta SX 1.5 petrol and just before finalising the deal with your dealer , it came to my notice that Creta SX is having "Alloy Wheels" (215 / 60 R17 Alloy) . But, spare wheel is a "steel one" (205 / 65 R16), that too is of different size.

When I inquired with sales executive, he responded that spare wheel is used as an emergency wheel .Providing a steel wheel as a stepney is to visually remind you to get the damaged tyre repaired at the first opportunity.

While I agree with his first logic of using spare for emergency situation, the rest of the argument doesn't seems logical. As lower variants of creta gets all wheels of same size and steel rim(205 / 65 R16. As the buyer of lower trim gets the tyres of same size material, it seems unfair to higher trim customer.

Please explain why the buyer of higher trim need to have different material and size of spare tyre.

Awaiting your reply.

Regards
(A prospective buyer)"
