Hello Gagan ji,

This is Deepanshu.

First of all thanks for doing great work and providing sensible reviews. It helps the genuine buyers save their hard earned money.

I am looking to buy my first car.

As of now I have been driving my dad's ford figo sports 1.0 petrol. I have had some concerns with figo due to low ground clearance and no mid range punch. I am always required to down shift, but its drive handling is something I like very much.

I have around 900km/month of running between mumbai and pune. But that is only for few more months, post that it should be less then 500km/month(except any miscellaneous trips)

The current mileage I am getting from my figo is 13.4kmpl. Currently highway driving is 60% and city is 40%.

Requirements:

I am looking to get a SUV.
My budget is at max if had to stretch then 17L on road. Lesser the better.
Diesel or patrol? Not sure.
Manual or CVT (not Amt or iMT)
I am looking to get better performance to mileage ratio. Simple.
Good 5 people seating.
Reliable (figo PCM module failed and had to be repaired which took 25k)
Safe
Comfortable on rough roads

I liked kushaq due to it's driving dynamics but I am bit unhappy with it's sitting space for 5 people and I feel that kushaq is bit claustrophobic.

MG Astor has underpowered engine. Creta has too much waiting and I don't like it's look. Older creta was better.

Now between new 2023 seltos and honda elevate I am confused. One proper differentiator is that if I want diesel then it's clear seltos. But should I get diesel? Safety is a compromised with seltos?
With current diesel price and future regulations etc. Is it worth it?

On youtube, people compare apples to oranges. They compare honda elevate zx with seltos top model. Price gap in ex-showroom is 6 to 7 lakhs. Elevate zx to seltos htx can be compared in price range.

I am not feature hungry, I need basics to work best and extra things are added benefits. 360 camera is something a gimmick I feel because till 5 years back, people were parking fortuner without single camera 😄. I can turn on my headlights and wiper no need of automation there.

Ventilated seat is something I find usefull but if AC is strong then I guess it works.TPMS is something useful, ADAS is not required but worthy addition then a 360 camera. I hope you get my point with features.

Since I have been driving ford figo, I find it's driving dynamics very good. I mean it's quite maneuverable at speeds of 130 140. So I would like to get similar if not better driving dynamics. What I don't like regarding figo is hard steering, Clutch and gear shifts. I mean they are precise, but very hard. Too much cabin NVH ( now I have done some door damping)

On side note, my heart asks for scorpio N (UP ka bhaukaal 😄) but I don't see getting z6 variant to be suitable and I don't want to extend budget. Also, fuel economy would also take hit.

Sorry for the question getting long. It's one shot to talk to expert. 😄

From finance point, I would be looking to get BH registration. So how much would I be able to save if I am buying in maharashtra navi mumbai.

What percentage should be my DP? Loan percent and tenure ?

Ps: I have still not seen hyryder or grand Vitara yet.

My parents asked to me also check regarding 7 seater muv. But I don't see within this budget any good muv (xl6 and carens). Please do add point here as well.

In the end , please suggest what would be the best option. Looking for great performance to mileage ratio without compromising safety and reliability, which can easily last for 8years.

Car which can bring smile. 😄

Thanks sir.

Sorry if question was Long. Cheers.

Hello Deepanshu ji,

Hi. Sure
Here are some pointers which will assist on need

1. Considering average usage as specified
I have around 900km/month of running between mumbai and pune. But that is only for few more months, post that it should be less then 500km/month(except any miscellaneous trips)

You do not need to go with Diesel. Somehow on highway / expressways - Modern age Petrol SUV cars in BS6 Era are fuel efficient and can deliver in better as against the old hatch Figo Petrol

2. As you have major usage on highway in Mumbai - Pune - even a Manual Car with Cruise control can make things easy to drive.

3. Would be a natural progression to upgrade from Hatchback to SUV as the trend these days

4. From Space Perspective as you seek space for 5 members - let me tell you Elevate feels even more narrow in space on 2nd row as against Kushaq. Somehow space on 2nd row is best for 2 adults only.

5. Skoda Kushaq too has slight stiffened clutch but still not as stiff as Figo, but older Figo had hydraulic steering - most of the modern age cars comes with Electric power steering (including new Harrier, Scorpio) which makes it easy to drive

6. As you seek 5 Member car with Practical Features, Performance, Driving Dynamics, Safety and Reliability at same time and basis budget as specified and that too in value price point - i suggest to look out for :-
a. Skoda Kushaq Ambition MT
or
b. Mahindra XUV300 W8 Option TurboSport or wait for facelift due for launch in early 2024

as both cars are pretty fun to drive, 5 star in safety rating, impressive steering, handling and kind of way where initial niggles been resolved are now much more matured products. Somehow XUV300 is compact one but this car was conceptualised as proper SUV with best in class legroom and rear seat under-thigh support in sub 4m SUV - but to bring in tax advantage offered by slashing boot.

Kushaq definitely has more space on rear seat as against Elevate and feels more fun in Mid range.

Why not other cars
a. Hyryder / G.Vitrara - quiet limited rear seat legroom
b. Seltos 1.5 NA Petrol / Creta 1.5 NA Petrol - Not to enthusiast driver, somehow best for relaxed drive
c. Astor - Low on Mileage
d. Nexon, Brezza - Space factor on rear seat
e. Large Size Scorpio N, XUV700 Petrol - Availability and mileage
f. Harrier base - limited features and is a Diesel model

Hope should help !!

Thanks for the response Gagan ji. I too was very eagar for German siblings but one of my friends took delivery of kushaq 1.0 style in august at pune , but he has complaints regarding AC trip off. Sales team told them this issue was resolved but this issue is still present.

My friend told me to go for 1.5 mt style which doesn't have this issue. But I am not sure if that price is justified or not.
Please clarify me if I am wrong.

Due to the following reasons, I saw that only viable options to be seltos (not enthusiastic car) and elevate (only becauseit has city's ivtec engine and cvt).

I have not seen Mahindra xuv300 yet because I felt it's more in venue segment. But I can check it. Although my experience with Mahindra sales team has not been good in navi mumbai area.
I have seen that folks in that specific showroom tends to judge people and if you are someone who in casual walked in to do inquiry..they tend to ignore. Not sure if it happens in all showrooms.

Please share some reasons to not get elevate as well which I can share with my dad 😄

Thanks sir. Cheers.

Hi,

1. Elevate although a great pick but biggest concern for your need
a. Rear Seat Shoulder room which is best fit for 2 people. Try to sit in with family
b. Fuel Efficiency which is relatively on lower side as against other SUV - on number terms take it almost 15% against Kushaq 1.0

2. Skoda Kushaq had many issues in past in terms of EPC, Aircon tripping, AC Effectiveness, Brakes but most of these are almost sorted. What existing in car
a. Noise levels are higher
b. Rattles are still there

But AC Effectiveness, Brake bite, EPC are what resolved
Am surprised to hear that your friend who bought this car in August is facing this issue. Did he bought BS6 one or older BS4 model for discounts. Can you check as in BS6 the issue is resolved. You can set Auto climate control to minimum or till 20 degree to let avoid AC trip.

3. Kushaq 1.5 available in Ambition and Style. Although Ambtion 1.5 could have been an excellent buy (basis different Aircon, 1.5 Engine Performance, Active cylinder tech) but production is very limited of 1.5 Ambition and most of the customers booked either changed to 1.0 Style or upgraded later to 1.5 Style. Somehow spending 5 Lakh more for 1.5 Style over 1.0 Ambition would be too much a call

4. Mahindra Sales team is riding high basis high customer demand as seen in Thar, Scorpio N, XUV700 and possibly turned more like delivery boys than pro sales - but still the after sales experience is at par and reasonably acceptable. Suggest to experience in XUV300 Turbosport

Hope should help

Thanks Gagan ji.

I will probably go tomorrow for test rides and check elevate, kushaq , seltos and xuv300.

Thr kushaq my friend has is BS6 only. Manufacutrd in month of June. He was able to negotiate some discount as manufacture was almost 3months old.

Rattling noise is something he too has mentioned but Aircon trip issue is still present for him in heavy traffic of pune. He told me that service center has once kept his car for 3 days but fix they did was worked for few days. Service center reduced rattling by Some fittings but it is still evident and can't be ignored.

Also, I am not sure how is the suspension of kushaq but for figo sports it was made stiff for high speed performance , but in day to day Jerks and vibration inside cabin is too much. Kushaq also had stiff suspension, I think little better but not great. I understand that is a sacrifice for good stable performance in high speed.

Gagan ji,

While I am going for takinf test ride. Just quick question
Within my budget of 17 on-road. Does any 7 seater makes sense? I can only see carens and XL6 to be the option. I think carens variant which would be available is 2nd to base only.
So do I have any options in 7 seater as well?

Cheers

Addition to last reply. I will be keeping my figo for next few years. So so I need to have a 7 seater between xl6 or carens? (None of them I like by safety standards)

For 7 Seater - If can stretch budget a bit - check out Hyundai Alcazar Prestige - based on K2 Platform - better rigidity and despite base has all essential elements as required.

Else if care less for platform - Kia Carens would be an excellent choice basis
a. SPace Management is by far the best for 7 members
b. Excellent Tuned suspension for comfort
c. Practical Features

The Renault Triber is one of the best cars available currently.

What you'll like:

• A 7-seat MPV at the price of B-segment hatchbacks. Lots of car for the money
• We like the crossover'ish styling. Looks swell for an MPV!
• Practical & spacious cabin, with a usable 3rd row. Ample storage too
• Incredible 625L boot with 3rd-row removed. Many cargo & seating combinations available
• Neutral road manners and city-friendly size (unlike most other 7-seater MPVs)
• Equipment for a budget car (4 airbags, touchscreen ICE, reversing camera)
• Loads of neat touches such as auto locking & unlocking, removable 3rd row seat, underseat drawer, fully adjustable 2nd row seats...

What you won't:

• Boring 1.0L petrol engine lacks pep & punch. It is the weakest link in this package
• Average NVH levels. Engine can get noisy, while vibrations are felt on the inside
• Some misses such as a thinner spare tyre, no foglamps / steering-mounted controls...
• Cabin width makes it a 6-seater, not 7 (i.e. 2 adults on the middle row, not 3)
• Minimal boot space with all seats occupied; you'll need that roof-mounted carrier
• No diesel option in the line-up
• Renault's after-sales service quality is inconsistent

Only reason I am avoiding Renault or Nissan is because I don't want to again get into a product which may not long in india. I have figo sportz which was second to top. Since ford has left, I am not getting good service . I had to pay 25k for power train related issue that too using a third party service station. Ford asked for 40k to replace pcu.

So yeah, that is the only reason.

Hello Gagan Ji,

In twisted turn of events my parents and family liked hyundi Verna as almost in same price of Elevate. I am not sure if it is a sensible decision but apart from ground clearnce doubts, I feel verna to be better. it offers better comfort, i feel iVT better then cvt of elevate and get more packaged item. What are your views?
Also, i had query regarding insurance which went unanswered. How can i save money in insurance, i see that hyundai is offering insuracne of 77k where as i can find insurance from good providers in as cheap as 35k. what am i missing?

Hi,

Hyundai Verna as a sedan is completely different category type
Been sedan you will sit low - but space is phenomenal in terms of legroom
Again headroom is limited as against Elevate - so if people with 5'9" or below to sit in and have no back pain / ortho issues - Verna would be more comfy.

Additionally - SUV and Sedan driving dynamics are lot different - a decision you need to make been sedan like Verna can perform better in terms of grip, handling in good roads

For Insurance
For Insurance - we recommend companies who have cashless tieup with Dealer Workshop

Pls connect with Workshop of dealer from whom you buying car and check with Body shop Manager (as hes the person who deal with insurance companies on day to day basis on feedback of Acko and claim settlement)

I am of opinion to always buy Tier 1 company like :-
a. ICICI Lombard
b. HDFC Ergo
c. Bajaj Allianz
d. Larger PSU players like NIC / National

as Insurance is a risk coverage product.

to choose any one. I suggest to check on dealer workshop on preferred companies and take there online quote.
Even inquire with there customer care - some do offer a bit of negotiation too in terms of insurance if shared competitive quote, but recommended to buy from Tier 1 players having long established claim settlement and defined process and compare quotes with Online

Hyundai dealer showroom is charging at rack rate or at lesser OD Discounts - can well negotiate by sharing in online quotes.
Else if he doesnt come down - may consider buying Online.
