I am planning to buy an SUV/MPV in the range of 10-20 lacs. My family has 4 members and I'm looking for a comfortable car.

My buying/selection parameters would be:

1. Driving- Delhi/NCR and minimal off roading.
2. No use case for daily commuting as I am WFH. The monthly run will be 100-500 km.
3. Should be a family car that can comfortably accommodate 4-5 people.
4. Good safety parameters.
5. Value for money and budget.
6. With good interiors

I checked multiple cars and found XUV700, Grand Vitara, Creta, Harrier facelift, and XL6 2022 matching my needs.

Among these, I found only Suzuki XL6 as value for money and it's a 6-seater.

I have few queries:

1. Is XL6 2022 a good buy seeing the price and the features etc.?
2. If yes, should I go for the zeta manual (base) variant and upgrade camera, seats from the aftermarket or the higher variants with 360 degree camera?
3. As BS6 Phase 2 will roll out from April 2023, is it fine to buy XL6 with BS6 Phase 1?
4. It is having 4 airbags and 6 airbags will be mandatory from Oct 2023, should I wait?
5. Should I go for other cars like the new Harrier, Creta, XUV700 etc?

I can only sell a BH-registered car to another individual who is also eligible for the same scheme. Otherwise, I will have to re-register the car in the respective state after paying pro-rata road tax and only then sell it to a private individual.
It seems a big hassle to re-register, then sell it and it totally nullifies the price benefit I have got at the time of purchase.
Please advise.

Abhilekh ji - am really unaware of any such clause
Where you read same. To best of my understanding - Once you own a BH Series car and if next buyer is not eligible for BH Series he can easily transfer car with a new registration mark of that state by paying applicable road tax on pro-rata basis (for left over period), but as seller you are not required to re-register car

Else if buyer is eligible then he can opt and continiue with BH Mark

What is the projected price hike? Is it a calculative choice to wait for BS6 Phase 2 and pay a higher price over the current model?

Official hike details will be there in 1st week of april, but should not be more than 3% of price of car
Yes with superior mileage, catalytics and latest emission with E20 compliant car would be worth a consideration,

I heard that there'll be issues during the resale of BH series cars. Is it true?

What issues do you foresee sir ?

I am looking to buy XL6 zeta manual BS6 Phase2 in April. Should I book now or wait till April?

Certainly pls book now. Prices will be relative higher of BS6 Ph2 cars. pls factor in decision before booking.

I am waiting for XL6 BS6 Phase 2 model as dealers are not giving any discount on the Phase 1 model. But, they are unsure about its arrival and pricing. I checked at Delhi and Gurgaon Nexa showrooms.

All Production from 1st April 2023 would be of BS Phase 2 Cars only meeting real drive emissions only
So can expect dispatches to reach dealers from end of 1st Week of april at max

I assume that after 1st April, BS6 Phase 1 car won't be sold/registered. Am I correct?

Its about Manufacturing and wholesale from OEM to dealer
I dont think that there is any ban on retail sale or registration of BS6 phase 1 car post april.

Hope should help !!

Nop - no upfront discount at all on XL6
Dealer showroom actually on flip side state waiting period of 4 to 8 weeks

However,
1. You can ask dealer to show Insurance premium of all partnered companies under Maruti Insuance (as there is some differential premium offered under Maruti Insurance). Rest its recommended to opt for Maruti Insurance product only

2. Avoid in Bundled accessories pack

3. BH Series biggest issue in Delhi is on calculation - dealers are charging at Exshowroom Price (instead of Invoice price before GST & Cess as what BH Circular states) and even RTO is keeping silent on same. So you have to check with dealer first on whats the BH Amount and get his response on calculation without GST & Cess.
For all reasons if BH Series Road Tax is calculated as per prescribed method then indeed would turn out economical
Pls check - Calculate BH Series Road Tax

Hope should help !!

GaganJi,
Regarding XL6, how should I negotiate with the dealer? They are adamant about pricing. Attached is the price list for your reference.

Today, I went to the Mahindra showroom and met with a cold response. Even the basic trim of XUV700 has a 5~6 month waiting. Dropped the idea.

Also, what is the benefit of BH number over normal? My employer is operating in more than 4 locations and seems that I am eligible. In terms of price, it looks cost-effective over normal road tax. Please advise

Well - Safety come from
> Controlled Driving Speed
> Following Basics by keeping safe distance limits from cars in front, follow lane drive
> Active Safety Features including Braking, ESP

and then comes finally the passive safety of build quality - where car scored yes mediocre but now with 4 Airbags as console
Been most of the usage of yours going to be in city - dont think anything to worry

Why Maruti Sells high and carries high resale
> Very High on Reliability
> Superior Engine NVH
> Score High on Fuel Efficiency
> Practicality of Space with Features in Budget
> Competitive service cost with easy affordable spares

and although some cost cuttings are there with average platics - but overall from True Value for money with captain row seats on 2nd Row - XL6 Zeta is interesting proposition and not to worry

Thanks, Gagan Ji for your reply.

Most people are skeptical and complain about Maruti Suzuki Cars, their quality, safety, etc.
Is it really true after Toyota-Maruti JV?
Should I invest my money in Maruti cars?
Does XL6 has a better resale value as compared to its rivals?

Regarding XL6, how should I bargain with the dealer? They are adamant about pricing. Attached is the price list for your reference.

Abhilekh Sahab,

Hi. Hope doing great !!

Maruti XL6
Indeed an interesting proposition for car buyers who seek
> Utmost Comfortable Cabin with 2nd Row Seats to be used as captain row seats having slide, recline and independent armrest - an excellent spacious cabin for 4 adults and 2 kids.

> An upgrade over Ertiga with Premium Crossover looks, and all black layout in interiors with piano black finish on dash looks premium (yes to few may found it claustrophobic too but every car buyer has his own set of preferences - to some sporty / to some families claustrophobic)

> Yes suspension is on stiff note and ride feels bit firm in local use in these 16 Inch Wheels - but still not excessive firm to be bone jarring

> Indeed the presence of almost every essential modern age feature - LED Lights, 16 Inch Alloys, Push Ignition, Cruise, Auto Climate, Rear AC, Touchscreen with Android Auto, Foldable ORVM and many more along with safety specs of 4 Airbags, ESP, Hill Assist with very high score on Reliability, Fuel Efficiency and Resale factor makes it value. Brake bite is excellent in XL6 (despite of front disc brakes only)

Some Alternatives
But care for even better cabin space and more comfort oriented suspension - Kia Carens is there but
> Longer waiting for base models
> way price hikes happened - makes it relative expensive proposition over XL6

Maruti Grand Vitara is definitely a notch up product over XL6 basis again
> Matured Suspension
> Huge Difference in Smart Play of XL6 and Smart Pro Touchscreen of Grand Vitara fluidness and resolution
> Additional Safety Specs
> Better Build (as rightly referred earlier that 3*** for Ertiga)
> Despite of same engine and both products as stable from Maruti - the way Grand Vitara drives feels more planted and superior over XL6

But indeed price point you pay for better product is higher

Coming to Final Recommendation
2. No use case for daily commuting as I am WFH. The monthly run will be 100-500 km.

With such low tunning usage - indeed from Value Price Point perspective - i suggest to go with XL6 Zeta which will meet in need of
a) Space
b) Features
c) Reliability
d) Ownership Experience
in value for money. As upgrade can add rear view camera with display in touchscreen (in Maruti Genuine Accessories cost in around rs 6000 or so)

For other Queries
1. As BS6 Phase 2 will roll out in April 2023, is it fine to buy a car with BS6 Phase 1? How much difference in terms of driving and mileage?

This 1.5 Litre Engine will be upgraded to meet in Real Drive Emissions with changes in
> Catalytics
> Fine tune up in Engine
> Updated OBD with Controlled Emissions

Dont expect difference in drive performance, but yes emissions will be controlled and with upgraded catalytics and engine tuneup - NVH will be improved too.

2. Regarding the 6 airbags, should I wait till Oct 2023?

Chances are that OEM may upgrade cars earlier too (can be pleasantly surprise if they do it much earlier in BS6 Ph2 itself as Carens USP is 6 Airbags, Now Creta is available with 6 Airbags as std - but no official communication so far)

But if not too - Having Dual Front and Side Airbags are still sufficient to protect in case of emergency.

3. How much is expected will the price hike be due to the above changes?

Anticipated 25K to 35K for BS6 Phase 2, while for additonal safety of airbags will be another 15K to 20K
if they introduce additional airbags at later stage then may add additional input cost

4. Automatic vs Manual - Which one to go with?

No Doubt - Automatic makes it easy and convenient
But when you have Work from home and no daily need to drive in peak hours of traffic and such limited usage as mentioned - Manual Transmission is value. XL6 has light clutch so wont be an issue too.

Hope it helps in making right choice and answering your queries too.

My points behind XL6:
1. XL6 is a spacious 6-seater MPV and Grand Vitara is a 5-seater compact SUV.
2. On the cost perspective, XL delta costs INR1304739 and GV delta costs INR1584505, around a difference of INR 2,85,000.
3. Interiors can be improved like stitching, bucket seat covers, ambient light, etc.

If I go for XL6:
1. As BS6 Phase 2 will roll out in April 2023, is it fine to buy a car with BS6 Phase 1? How much difference in terms of driving and mileage?
2. Regarding the 6 airbags, should I wait till Oct 2023?
3. How much is expected will the price hike be due to the above changes?
4. Automatic vs Manual - Which one to go with?

If I go for Grand Vitara,
1. Waiting time is 5~6 months.
2. BS6 Phase 2 will be costlier.

Please advise.

Dear Abhilekh,

Hi. Greetings !!

2. No use case for daily commuting as I am WFH. The monthly run will be 100-500 km.

Thats too low running,
Although XL6 is spacious, lot of features in Alpha Plus, refined engine, reliability, competitive maintenance but somehow
> This car drives like a MPV, slight stiffer suspension
> All Black Interiors are not to everyone taste- with black dash layout, black seats - sometimes tends to be claustrophobic
> Smaller 7 Inch Touchscreen unit as against the 10 Inch one in new maruti cars range
> Based on Ertiga Platform only, and somehow Ertiga scored in 3 Star in NCAP Rating

Rest with limited usage - can be considered but not value for money

Alternative: Maruti Grand Vitara Zeta and would be worth for additional 1 Lakh over XL6 basis
> Suspension which feels more matured leading to more comfort and yet better balance on higher speed (the best tuned suspension across all Maruti Cars)
> 6 Airbags, All 4 Disc Brakes adds on confidence of safety
> 9 Inch Smart Pro Plus HD Touchscreen as against 7 Inch one
> Feels more upmarket in Interiors
> More Stylish with Superior Road Presence
> Better Handling over XL^ as feel more like SUV as against MPV
> Better Build Quality over XL6

In terms of cons
> Somehow rear seat legroom is not the best
> Slight Limited headroom space if someone is taller than 5'11'
But to view Grand Vitara Zeta would be better off as a product as against XL6 Zeta

For other cars
Harrier - Diesel only and stiffer steering due to hydraulic steering setup
Creta - wait for new gen or new Seltos due for launch this summer
XUV700 - much longer waiting on lower Ax5 trim

Suggest to have test drive to experience.
Hope should help !!
