Dear Sir,

Good evening and hope you are well.

My question to you is that I’m the only bread earner of my family of 5 members and posted in Hyderabad. I’m doing job in banking sector and transferable in nature hence need a family car with budget of 8 to 9lakh on road price.

Please advise about list of cars with automatic gear which is best for highway as well as city drive along with safety features and good mileage.

Your kind advice with this greatly help me.
Thank you.

Dear Subrata Sahab,

Hi, Hope doing great
Considering 8 to 9 Lakh Budget Range with BH Series Number Plate for family use car for
a) Best Use on Highway
b) Decent for city

with Safety Specs and Mileage - see here are some available options

Tata Punch Adventure AMT Rhytm
a. An excellent 5 STar Build Car which is ready to offer perfect protection in case of mishap

b. Ease of Ingress, Egress. So much comfy in terms of Ingress, Egress for senior members - that Punch appears to be second best choice (after Wagon R in sub 10 Lakh Price) for senior members of family who can simply walk in cabin without bend

c. Decent cabin space with pretty acceptable legroom and acceptable shoulder room for 4 adults and 1 average physique. Boot Space is deep at 366 Litres (although loading lip is slight higher)

d. On highway will admire in class leading handling experience. Steering is pretty firm on higher speed and yes suspension is on firm note too - car appears to be in full control. 15 Inch Wheels with R15 185/70 offers decent grip

e. Loaded with all essential features - AC, Power Steering, All 4 Power Window, Remote Lock, Rear View Camera, Touchscreen with Android Auto with Stylish Road Presence

f. As experienced - a fair mileage expectation of 17 Kmpl on highway and 12 to 13 kmpl in city can be considered in regular use.

What you wont Like
a. Steering felt heavier on city use too. Its not a Maruti or Hyundai type steering. Some amount of definite firmness on city usage felt

b. Engine feels coarse and relative much higher noise, vibration. So much so that cabin insulation feel real bad with both engine noise, wind nose and at times tyre noise too felt in cabin

c. Pickup feels slower post 60 Kmph and at 80 Kmph turns even slower too. This 3 cylinder engine is not at all exciting to drive for car enthusiasts

d. Yes, AMT is Jerkier and higher pause effect felt at times. In present times - Maruti and Hyundai did considerable improvement in AMT which is slight missing in this car

Alternative: If you feel like getting rid of AMT issues, jerkiness and need smooth pickup and slight more light steering response but
> without any compromise on safety
> without any compromise on handling

then next alternative is Tata Altroz XTA DCA - which although will marginally exceed the upper end of budget (if you buy Insurance online) but much more Smooth response in pickup in DCA feels more linear without jerks

Steering is also not as firm as in Punch and suspension not excessive stiff as in Punch - so more comfort and relative light steering for experience in city use. But high speed handling dynamics again are top notch and relative lesser body roll as tyres are wider, ground clearance is lower with even more stability.

But what wont like again
a. Engine feels coarse and relative much higher noise, vibration. So much so that cabin insulation feel real bad with both engine noise, wind nose and at times tyre noise too felt in cabin

b. 1.2 DCA Performance feels mediocre. Although pick up is linear, but feels mid range is relative flat and takes away excitement of car

c. dual clutch Automatic uses planetary gearbox - its one of its kind as never ever used in Dual Clutch Automatic transmission before.
Also, Unlike other DCT or DSG Cars Tata Altroz uses single shaft - so cant speak of reliability perspective as DCA was barely launched 6 months ago

Suggest to have test drive.
Feel free to share your experience and any queries if any on above.

One more alternative wish to update

If you want
> Much Better cabin refinement
> Superior Engine NVH in 4 cylinder Engine
> Fuel Efficiency at its Best
> Near Best in Class Cabin Space
> Loaded Features in lifestyle
> 6 Airbags Safety with ESP, Hill Assist

should consider Maruti Baleno Zeta AMT

a. This car is more engaging and fun to drive.
b. AMT response is much better over Tata
c. Service experience is like close to benchmark as Maruti products are considered pretty reliable
d. End Fuel efficiency in real world condition is lot better as benchmark
e. Although Maruti claimed to improve build quality (no data to prove how much improved) but with 6 Airbags, ESP - car is fully loaded with active and passive safety. With Hill Assist - can make it easy on steep inclines too
f. High Speed Stability is acceptable in R16 195 tyres

But the biggest con is :-
a) steering feels relative vague at times especially on higher speed
b) Build Quality need some authentication to be proved safe. Somehow Hyundai self proclaimed high figures for Creta, I20 but it all came as fuss.

Should experience Baleno Zeta AMT too with overall pros exceed cons too
