Hi,

I recently upsized tyres from 195/60 R16 to 215/60 R16 in my Nexon XMS of Michelin Primacy 4.

I thought that since the top model of Nexon has 215/60 tyres, it would be fine for me too. But I came across the tyre calculator and it says that the upsizing is not recommended.

The Michelin tyre representative and a Tata dealer salesperson said that the upsize is fine.

I have already paid 7k per tyre to the Michelin dealer. Requesting your guidance on this.

Should I buyback 195/60 R16 tyres? Or something else should be done? Please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi,

Greetings !!

Tata Motors indeed use in 2 sizes
a) R16 195/60 in Base Trims to XZ
b) R16 215/60 in Top End XZ Plus and XZA Plus Trim

Although prima facie R16 215/60 yes looks oversize as against R16 195/60 but advantage as of
a) Wider Tyres ensure better stability on higher speed
b) On Wet Surface - these wider tyres will perform better

But we drove in Nexon XM and XZ Plus too and to our observation R16 215 definite has no need to upsize in such sub 4 meter crossover.
Reason - Fuel Efficiency in real world will be marginally better in R16 195 tyres
Also, will be lesser stiffened ride in R16 195 Tyres

So point is
a) If you are someone whos drive to majorly on expressway or wet roads or possibly off roads then R16 215/60 tyres could be pick
b) If you are someone whos drive maximum in city use or in controlled speed then R16 195/60 tyres are better suited

Now as you have replaced same - no need to go back to downsize but kind note that Tyre pressure need to be kept at 30 psi at max in R16 215 tyres (which is relative lower psi against R16 195 tyres)

Lastly did you replaced the Steel RIM with Alloy Wheel RIM too
Whats the alloy Size as minimum RIM width be 6.5J

Hope should help !!

Thank you so much for the response. This gave me a little confidence.

Apologies for not mentioning it earlier, but I have not replaced the steel rims with alloys.
Are the stock steel rims compatible with this tyre size?

Please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi Abhinav ji,

Nop Steel RIM as used in Nexon lower variants is not compatible with R 215 Width Tyres

To tell you RIM Width as used in lower variants is 6J which is ideal for R195 Tyres with maximum upsize to R205 Tyres
For R215/60 tyres, you need RIM with minimum size of 6.5J or 7J - Nexon XZ Plus uses 6.5J Alloys

So you need to replace Wheels too

Details on RIM Width and Tyre Size
https://mycarhelpline.com/images/tyrerimideal.jpg

So action for you
1. Replace RIM with 6.5J or 7J Size
2. Keep Tyre Pressure at 30 Psi

to get the best from given tyres

Hope should help !!

Thank you for the information.

Sir as of now I'm stuck in a strange position.

I have already spent a good amount on tyres, and spending 7-8k per alloy wheel will be a little pricey for me.
Moreover, the place where my parking is has been prone to theft of wheels in the past, particularly wheels were stolen from an SUV.
Although things are better now, but a risk is there, since it's an open parking, and is 300-400 metres away from my home.

In this scenario, would it be better to get a buyback on these 215/60 tyres and get 195/60 Pilot Sport 4 tyres?
I did talk to the MIchelin dealer and he told me that he'll be able to give a deal, since it's just 4 days since I got the tyres installed.

Request you to let me know about this.
