Hello All,
Want to buy a big diesel SUV with automatic transmission. Really inclined towards the XUV 700 (AX7 L) but 2 years waiting shared by dealer. The confusion is should I settle for a second hand Fortuner. Here are the doubts I have:
1. Since I am in Gurgaon, buying a 2018 (per budget) Fortuner will only come with 6 years life, will have to force sell in 5 years. New Fortuner is out of budget and my running is low (had to sell my XUV 500 for 4 lacs after doing just 80k KMs in 8 years)
2. Even if I decide to look for a Fortuner, what is a good price. I see cars listed between 32 to 40 lacs for 2018 models. New one is 43 lacs and the depreciation doesnt seem fair
3. Is the Fortuner as fun to drive as the XUV, I have heard the steering is hard
4. In terms of overall cost of ownership (considering the depreciation on a new car will be higher), is the Fortuner a better choice
4. I am completely ignoring the Ford Endeavour, is that a mistake

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Dear Ashutosh ji,

Greetings !!
Irony in buying Used Fortuner remains the fact that asking price is what too high and even some owners after owning car for 3 to 4 yrs ask for a price which was what the exshowroom price at that point of time

Let me tell you Prices of 2nd Gen Fortuner in Second Half of 2018 was in range of 30.76 Lakh for 4x2 to 32.7 Lakh 4x4 Wheel Drive Automatic in exshowroom - translating to 34.5 Lakh to 37 Lakh On road price. So asking price of buyers if someone asking 40 Lakh is like highly exaggerated - means he is asking a price which is even higher than the price he bought the car and on top of it you would still be left with just 6 yrs shelve life basis 10 yr ban on Diesel car

Also - Insurance differential would be what paid by you and adding on if car driven like 60K to 70K odd kms then you have to spend higher for tyre replacement cost too.

I tell you Fortuner is a great all round car in bullet proof reliability, niggle free ownership but if you ask me
a) Comfort of Drive
b) Ease of manoeuvrability
c) Engine Noise Levels

then at any given day all new XUV700 outperform in Fortuner
The suspension is tuned towards comfort, light steering, engine feels more refined as against Diesel engine in noise levels

Yes Fortuner offer peace of mind ownership, road presence, performance, unmatched reliability but why to spend so high on a Used car
Infact at 35 Lakh you can even have 5 yr Landrover Discovery Sport - albeit with even lesser kms on odo - so its the hype which goes on with Fortuner.

Ford: Ford Endeavour basis driving dynamics, comfort again has an edge over Fortuner
But Ford is now out of Indian Market - if you wish you can play on Depreciation game by checking if theres an option in like 15 Lakh to 17 Lakh for a 4 yr Old Endeavour - i bet this discounted price will take care of all factors making it value buy.

Else - here are some options
1. Try if can get in XUV700 at a premium - although its not official but there can be possibilities of getting it much earlier.

2. Wait for Upcoming XUV900 - which Mahindra trademarked name for Alturas next gen - however no details on launch as of now but can face up during end 2022 or early 2023

Thanks. This is helpful. However even Endeavor owners are expecting 27-30 lacs for 4-5 year old variants. There is a Hyundai Tucson 2017, 2.0 E-VGT 2WD, AT GLS which I m negotiating with the owner at 14.5 lacs. The car has done only 23k kms ( I will verify this and the service history of the vehicle) . But generally, is this a good car for that price. If I retain it 4.5 years and sell, what should i expect as a price? Thanks again

Hi,

Endeavor
If someone asking for 27 Lakh for 5 yr old car then hes still in dreams or just dont want to sell. With Manufacturer been shut down operations - resale turned down significantly and so much so that if someone seek to sell then 15 Lakh to 16 Lakh (4x2 AT) to 17 Lakh to 18 Lakh (4x4 AT) is what fair price for a 5 yr Old Endeavor in context depending on condition, odo reading and Diesel ban rules in Delhi / NCR Zone.

Just to tell you Ford endeavor Automatic Prices (exshowroom prices) in 2017 were
> Trend 4x2 AT - 23.78 Lakh
> Titanium 4x2 AT - 27.93 Lakh
> 3.2 Trend 4x4 Automatic - 27.68 Lakh
> 3.2 Titanium 4x4 Automatic - 30.89 Lakh

and on top of it - 10 yr Ban on Diesel cars in Delhi, NCR is still there.

For Tucson
A great all round car, but can try Santa Fe too as resale of Santa Fe after discontinuation is heavily reduced and as product and road presence Santa Fe was as good as Fortuner or Endeavour - am sure will get same too in around 15 Lakh price.
