Hi Hope you are doing well.

I'm in a process to upgrade my car short listed few cars
1. Mg Astor cvt top model
2. Hyundai Creta ivt.

I will be driving mainly in city with weekend long drive with small family of three person. I need automatic car . I was looking for venue but when I saw mg Astor got carried away with interiors ,build quality , and features took several drives and even booked the car sharp cvt with ADAS but with cvt I feel lags .

Since so far I'm driving manual cars, does all cvt gear lags though after initial lags its smooth. I tried Taigun 1.0 TSI and creta dct gear box one, Taigun drive was better but car looks and interiors looks old Creta drive was smooth but its crowded now and the features, looks and quality I found in Astor somehow made me to consider this car but few things bothering me, cvt lags overtaking may be problematic I feel I took the car in my basement parking area felt noise while driving through ramp is this OK, there is manual mode of gear shifting which I could not tried, will that help me out or shall I consider turbo as it cost me more around 170 k.

And I want to keep the car for longer period n I felt in near future I won't feel odd as this car has lot of futuristic and safety features which others will be including in future. But again stuck with reliability as its new brand some times I feel to go with Creta, Seltos I didn't tried as it looks more boxy.

Please guide me , suggest me any other cars also if you think I should consider I don't want to exceed from 20 Lakh budget. Please I need you professional advice, it will be highly appreciated if you can reply soon as car has been alloted to me have to reply them.

Thanks
Tasawar

Dear Dr Sahab,

Greetings !!

As i understand you driving CVT after experiencing Manual Transmission and has some concerns on CVT behavior in Astor
Let me tell you

1. CVT Layout: CVT unlike other Manual Transmission or Automatic Transmission has no gears at all.
It works on gear ratio concept.

So what it essentially means in layman terms
a. Car gear ratio changes at every speed which is desined to optimised fuel efficiency and performance.
b If you drive in relaxed way with linear gentle push on acclerator - CVT turns ideal as there turns no lag and performance turns butter smooth
c. But if you drive in slight enthusiastic way or hard push on accelerator pedal - it takes time to adjust in rpm with speed and thus you may witness car rpm increasing without corresponding increase in speed - giving a feel of lag and higher engine noise

Now point c is there in all CVT Cars - but Manufacturers adjust in same basis engine & technological knowhow
You may somehow find Hyundai, Honda, Nissan edging out in CVT tuneup as against other OEM

2. MG as Brand is pretty impressive in features, voice assistance and feels premium
But when it comes to performance somehow

a. Will rate performance good for masses who seek and give higher weightage to features, space, styling, tech features but when you ask from driving enthusiasts - the steering feedback, highway dynamics, performance feels mediocre.
b. Is designed and build for pleasure and relaxed drive, but if you seek performance or sheer top notch refinement of CVT - then Creta has relative better feel over it.
c. At lower end MG Astor CVT do feels a bit laggy if compare against Creta IVT or Seltos IBT
c. End Fuel Efficiency - Mileage of MG Astor CVT - well is relative lowest in Mid SUV Segment petrol (if compare Creta, Seltos, Kushaq, Taigun in list)

3. MG Network MG extending network and like any other brand is reliable, higher localisation at MG Plant with network now extended to
a) Gloster
b) Zs EV
b) Hector Plus & Hector
c) Astor

and will further be extended to another affordable EV Car in 2022 and 5 more cars to launch in next 3 yrs to take MG Portfolio to 10 Models in Indian Market. I dont foresee any reliability issued basis warranty and intial service feedback we have of MG Customers which more or less is satisfactory at higher end,

MG offering classic service plan package which cost under Rs 25000 for 5 yrs - ensuring low service costs of car too.

Recommendation
MG is good, but as product basis
> CVT Responsiveness
> Fuel Efficiency
> Even Proven resale and cost of ownership
> Slight Better Handling & Comfort aspect

Hyundai Creta Sx Option IVT although costs 2 Lakh higher over Astor but is better product pick and recommended for superior experience
Hope should help !!

Thanks for your prompt response but still Im not convinced or you can say taken away by astor look and built n features.
Today I went to Hyundai showroom for Td of creta sx ivt,, though it was for small stretch but i felt its slightly better than astor cvt, but still i feel built quality, interiors and features are better in astor as i went back to Mg showroom and checked astor once again and felt same, a fresh
new look. Does manual mode of CVT astor will help me for uphill driving or like driving through ramp of my basement parking. Creta Sx ivt optional will cost 70k more than astor cvt top model. where i will get ventilated driving seat with electrical adjustment, wireless charger and autodimin orvm. My monthly ride is 1000 km mainly in city with weekend long drive .. shall i consider Astor turbo AT( torque convertor) which may cost 180k more [b][b]or still creta sx optional ivt will be best buy as Iwant to keep this car for long period hence reliability matters same times I should not feel im driving outdated car after one or two years as i have heard that creta facelift is in pipeline with adas feature for Indian market and hope other companies too will be launching cars with adas and other features too, if its true then what is expected timeline so i can think to wait as i really like the Adas features in astor.
How much difference will be there in fuel efficiency between cvt and turbo At of astor. How reliable torque convertor gearbox is and their maintenance.
Ground clearance is not yet revealed officially in mg brochure but dealer said its 185 mm . is it ok or how did u find the astor ground clearance.
Please guide me
Thanks

Dear Dr Sahab,

Pls find Point wise reply

Creta or Astor
Its like 2 sides of coin, as i referred that basis
> CVT Responsiveness
> Fuel Efficiency
> Even Proven resale and cost of ownership
> Slight Better Handling & Comfort aspect

Recommendation is Hyundai Creta Sx

But when it comes to
> Exterior Looks
> Interior Design
> Upmarket feel
> ADAS
> Package offering at price Point of Features, Styling, Moden Tech

MG Astor feels like Value

So - ends down to whats preference of buyer.

ADAS
Technological Features is the what on radar of buyers and although Creta lacks same in existing version but basis highly positive response of buyers towards Autonomous feature in Astor and XUV700 - Hyundai can very well expect to roll out in 2022 Festive season or early 2023 for
> ADAS
> Digital Display
> Cosmetic Upgrade

Astor turbo AT
Although Astor Turbo will feel in more responsive but at any given day for Turbo Buyer who seek performance, handling - VW Taigun / Skoda Kushaq remains a notch better and i really cant recommend MG over same
For someone who seek
> Performance
> Steering Feedback
> Dynamics of car
and thus considering Turbo Petrol - to view competition offers an edge out there.

If Astor is in line, then CVT is there for relaxed drive, For Lag and all - its all about making adjustment to driving style with the car, and once done - owner will always find a sweet spot in drive feel.

Rest both
> Torque Converter
> CVT / IVT
are equally reliable

Ground clearance
Is 180 mm Unladen, however Laden may drop to 150 mm levels - which is still fine as suspension is not super soft
For Ground clearance - may refer this post on Cars with Highest Ground clearance

Hope should help !!

Thanks again for your reply
One thing I would like to mention here that I dont want to compromise on performance , engine and gearbox etc What i need or like with a decent performance if car also looks, good built quality and safety features are well equipped with all modern life style features. But I think this is an ideal situation which I am sure very hard to find out at this range of budget. To summarize i will be looking for a car with decent performance , if not excellent with proper safety and good looking too.
Turbo astor i have mentioned just because of CVT lag .. as I am not behind of turbo engine... so if its not astor then i will be opting creta.. though taigun ride quality is superior than creta too but car looks old.Kushaq i didnt tried but i am sure it will be more or less same as taigun.
Though I have booked Astor CVT if its not worth then i can cancel, I am not in hurry. Please suggest as per the real sitaution not as per my liking.. yes i got attracted towards astor .. looks, built quality, and safety features. test drive i found cvt lag or else its very smooth. But if in terms of performance and reliability if its not suitable then i can think of other cars. So far i have shortlisted astor and creta. Since creta is too crowded and looks old and lacks certain features like 360 degree camera at least which i m sure car of this segment will be offering in their upcoming facelifts and new launch. so please suggest as per
Preference: Decent performance , with good look, safe and reliable comparatively if not excellent. even if u suggest that i should wait for creta facelift or any other car of this segment is likely to be launch in 6 months from any reliable company then i can think of it.
Please share view on present creta IVT sx O model: how is the gearbox and engine how it performs in hills too. as creta they dont have test drive vehicle on request they gave me for a small stretch of city where it looks quite good.
Today i have plan to take astor cvt in hilly area as every weekend i used to go there as its just 30 km away from my town.I want to check how it performs in such hills. I will share you my experience.
Thanks

Dear Dr Sahab,

Hi, hope doing great.

If you seek no compromise on
> Performance
> Excellent Build Quality
> Fully Loaded Active and Passive Safety Specs
> Lifestyle Features

I think the best choice we have as of now in the segment as Skoda Kushaq Style Automatic (1.5 DSG) / VW Taigun GT Line TSI.
If you feel like DSG not as reliable due to so many internet articles - then may consider in 1.0 TSI in 6 Speed Automatic

Looks are subjective and to view is all like getting in love with the car. The more you experience - more you fell in love

Now for Creta IVT is smooth but as what said CVT / IVT is best suited for Plain roads
Care for Hill drive - although for standard slopes you wont experience any issues - but if has to experience on steep inclines and car loaded - at any given day
> either should engage in manual mode and overide through paddle shifters in IVT
or
> opt for Turbo Petrol Engine with minimal lag where ofcourse Creta DCT or Taigun AT or Kushaq AT
or
> if flexible on budget may check out Mahindra XUV700 Petrol Automatic

Hope should help !!

Dear Gagan
Thanks again for your reply and your effort to explain men. Sorry I could not concentrate on this due to workload.. due to covid...
Of course taigun has better ride quality but somehow i dont like taigun and kushaq too. I have shortlisted Creta and astor as per my liking of design, features and drive
Astor look, design and features made me to think over creta but have reservation regarding their reliability
Creta i like it but its too much crowded; so please tell me among these two which one you will suggest.. and if its creta then shall i wait for facelift as im not in hurry though i have booked astor cvt ( cvt im not going to buy it at all specially astor cvt).
Thanks

Dear Dr Sahab,

Creta Facelift still has time
As new gen creta was launched in March'20 - expect minimum 30 month time frame for launch of New Creta that means - indicative time period will be by Festive Season of 2022

For Astor - in terms of
> Reliability
> After Sales Service

I dont foresee any much issue basis vastly satisfactory experience of MG Hector, Hector PLus, Zs EV & Gloster Owners
The reason of pitching Creta over Astor is that Creta feels dynamically as superior experience
While Astor on other hand offers more features at lesser price point - so its upto a customer to choose in basis preference criteria.

Hope should help !!
