Hello Gagan Ji,

Trust you are staying safe and keeping well!

My father has been driving a Maruti Celerio CNG for last 5yrs and is now on a look out for a change and honestly it's ageing too. I suggested NIOS AMT wherein we can get after market CNG installed, but he has his eye on Venue 1.2 S Plus (plan to have after market CNG installed) which is a Natural Aspirated engine due to better ingress and egress, given his age. Driving is mostly within the city and he cannot live without CNG and petrol cost is very high, please advise.

By the way, I regularly follow your videos and has become an ardent fan of yours and hands down to your impeccable knowledge that is unmatched :).

Dear Sumiit ji,

Thanks, appreciate in your kind support and glad to be of assistance !!

I appreciate your interest towards CNG Car and makes all sense basis
> Running Cost
> Environmental factor

But - unfortunately bad news is that RTO in maximum locations are not endorsing CNG Kit in a BS6 Petrol Car (if retro fitted),
Yes, post 2 level emission jump from BS4 to BS6 and considering fine changes which manufacturer did in car, from safety aspect perspective a ruling came in that
> Retro Fitment CNG Kit on BS6 Petrol Car is not allowed

Only cars with Factory Fitted CNG Kits are allowed for registration purpose.

Although, a series of discussions happening for last 15 month or so by different stakeholder bodies
> CNG Kit Manufacturer
> Retro Fit CNG Center
with Transport Department but still as of now CNG if retro fitted is not allowed to be endorsed on RC in a BS6 Petrol car.

Options

> Consider Used Venue BS4 / Nios AMT one and get CNG Fitted and endorsed

or

> As no BS6 AMT Car available in Factory Fitted Kit. But, if you go ahead in with Manual Transmission - then Aura is a good choice with factory fitted kit or if from ingress, egress perspective then Ertiga CNG is there but unsure how comfortable will your father be driving a full size 4.4 Meter MPV and that too for local city usage having higher turning radius.

Hope should help !!

Hello Gagan Ji,

Thanks for you swift revert, this really shows the passion you carry towards your job.

I discussed at a length about your response with my father and elder brother and we continued pondering over it until last night when you released a new video on after effects of CNG installation on BS6 model. Then, my father said if that is the case then, can we consider a car with premium features albeit keeping in mind high fuel prices and basis on my father's age and his pursuits, we shortlisted two models, primary Kia Sonet Diesel MT (HTX) and second Kia Sonet IMT Petrol (HTX), both vehicles give 15 – 17 kmpl in city as per what I studied and they both fall under 12.5 lacs.

I made him drive both the vehicles and he was more inclined towards Diesel MT as he hasn’t driven any AT car before (of course he now understands what IMT is all about) and traditional driving with gear and clutch made the driving super easy for him. Plus, as informed in my previous communication, ingress and egress is similar to Venue and when he found both HTX comes with Sunroof, rear armrest, alloys, he immediately said, don’t look any further. So you can say being a Grandfather of two kids, he wants our kids to also enjoy some luxury features.

However, I need your expert advice to help me choose the right vehicle for my father.

Hello Sumiit ji,

I truely understand that.
See - we all buy car for long term perspective and one of the key consideration in present age is
> Meeting aspiration
> Lifestyle
> Convenience

Kia Sonet is a perfect example of been hot success as it address in all 3 parameters
> A Very stylish car. One that you can instantly fell in love in terms of Looks, Exteriors

> Lifestyle features - Electric Sunroof, LED Headlights as the only car at this price point offers you Stylish LED Headlights, Touchscreen with Wireless Android Auto, Projector Fog Lights, Cruise Control, Auto Climate Control with Rear AC, Rear View camera - possibly every modern day essential feature for convenience, styling is loaded in this car. And yes starting end May'21 Now gets Stylish Alloy Wheels (earlier used to come with steel wheel)

> Convenience - IMT is fair convenient to use, but no harm in Diesel Manual too. Clutch is not that stiff as otherwise one gets in Ford Ecosport Diesel. Suspension is marginally on more stiffer side in Diesel but is more torquey too with even superior pickup and car surges in a mid range for an excisting performance character zone. Remember - the way Petrol prices are on an increase - Diesel Car like Sonet will ensure running cost to be almost 25% lesser than Counterpart Petrol Model

Adding on
> Improved Safety: Top of it Sonet got an upgrade in May'21 end with
a) ESP
b) Traction Control

Performance: Whichever model you choose in IMT Turbo or Diesel Manual - Performance factor is what love in.
Steering is pretty well sorted. Impressive Handling. Stiff Suspension with Wider R will ensure superior high speed stability

Concerns: Only 2 concerns
Build Quality : Post Seltos crash test results - there is definite a concern on build. But unfortunately - no car is perfect
if you go with Tata & Mahindra - you will face higher engine noise and lacks the features and engine refinement which otherwise offered by Kia Sonet at this price point.

I am of strong view that Speed and Driver skill matters the most
While a car with 5 star safety rating at 64 kmph can tumble down to 1 or 2 star if been imapcted at 80 Kmph and 0 star with fatal if impacted at 100 speed. So speed is the essence, follow speed limit, maintain distance, follow in traffic rules and drive with complete attention - be assure that will always come back home safely.

Rear Seat Space: Which am sure you would have tested in - to our view its relative compact - but as you tested in should not be a deal breaker

Important for Kia Sonet
See - Kia offers very competitive service cost and after sales service experience, but still if you plan for the model , recommend you to opt for
> 5 year / 1.2 Lakh Kms warranty : Rs 13500 + 18% GST
> 5 year Prepaid AMC Maintenance: Rs 23500 + 18% GST (including alignment & Balancing)

Overall - by going in with Rs 38000+ GST = Rs 44000 approx will ensure peace of mind ownership without any worry or concern of future upkeep service cost as your car will be like comprehensively covered for any mechanical part failure (except wear & tear items) and all scheduled services included in it.

Hope should help !!

Hello Gagan Ji,

I understand every bit of your information you have detailed above. As I mentioned above, my father is more inclined towards traditional gearbox and we as his children want him to drive an AT. And, the reason I have this query is due to the fact that my father at times uses half clutch and we believe that his age now demands an ease of driving.

Do you think it will be easy for him to drive a Diesel AT in local mostly and occasional highway driving.

I understand Sumiit ji,
But important is to understand - your father should be having confidence to drive an AT Car

I am aware of some cases, where next generation bought in Automatic Car for there parents / senior members of family citing
> ease of driving
> convenience factor

But, end reality is that cars lying standstill or used by next generation only as someone whos driving car for last 30 to 35 years just cant find himself comfortable on sudden shift towards Automatic one.

Its not that Automatic cars are difficult - its just that the preconceived mindset do not find comfortable for a change.

As car buying is a decision which involves amount going beyond a Million - important is the purpose for which you making purchase should be achieved.

May be you pls borrow an Automatic car from relative / friend or hire an Automatic car for few days to check and understand your parent need.
If the purpose is not achieved then such huge purchase may end up in vain or as undesirable factor.

That will help you making a right choice for your parent.

Hello Gagan Ji,

Many thanks for your suggestion above and both my father and elder brother after a series of discussion finalized KIA Sonet Diesel AT.

However, one doubt still prevails and I will try to put my raw thought on the table, we started our search from a compact SUV Venue 1.2 and get a retro fit CNG kit and then moved to a feature rich SUV (compromising a bit on mileage though) wherein we decided KIA SONET AT / MT Diesel, now the concern me and my brother has:

1. Does our father require a 1.5ltr engine to be driven in city?
2. And, will he able to manage such a huge engine in city driving?

We both tried to answer it on our own and relooked at your given options too and here is what we thought:

1. Our father may find 1.5 lts a bit heavy to drive in city.
2. Used Venue 1.2 is not available in the used car market either in Faridabad or Gurgaon (with a good reputed seller as that gives a peace of mind) and I haven't informed you yet, we reside in Faridabad.
3. Ease of convenience like AT is secondary to us and primarily we are looking for a compact SUV and if it can offer features with mileage, it will be like a cherry on the cake :) and I very well know all of this may not exist today but, probably in the future.

All these thoughts have literally sucked our minds and we are not able to come to a conclusion and I would humbly request you to advise us.

Nop - nothing like this that bigger engine will feel heavy like...
> Infact higher torque makes it rather ease for superior mid range response
> Turbo lag is minimal and will enjoy the power delivery performance to a great extent
> You wont find any stiffness due to 1.5 litre diesel engine (yes by default diesel engine need retuned suspension so suspension is marginally on stiffer note as against petrol one)

THeres nothing of that sort which he'll find it an issue in driving 1.5 litre diesel engine as against 1 Litre Turbo Petrol
Infact flip side is that he can use in Eco mode in car in day to day drive. What this mode does is that reduce in engine performance and tune in to optimize in for fuel efficiency. Been enough torque is there and care to drive in relaxed way with mileage - Eco mode of Sonet Diesel AT is a great way to achieve in desired

For Point 3 as specified
3. Ease of convenience like AT is secondary to us and primarily we are looking for a compact SUV and if it can offer features with mileage, it will be like a cherry on the cake :) and I very well know all of this may not exist today but, probably in the future.

> If you seek a Diesel one in Manual Transmission with Features and Fuel Efficiency at best for relaxed drive - Honda WRV SV Diesel is a great choice
> If you seek a Petrol one in Manual Transmission with Features and Fuel Efficiency at best for relaxed drive - Kia Sonet HTK Plus Petrol can be a great pick

Somehow cant recommend Kiger, Magnite as truely feel Sonet, Venue, Brezza, Nexon, WRV are better than the lot.\

Hai Sumiit ji,

Great Choice !!
Indeed there is a huge rush for Sonet with months long waiting on some variants

Unfortunately no discounts on Sonet, the only thing can save on
> yes on Insurance front can save
> Opt for 5 Yr Limited Kms warranty as price list of most of dealers have 5 yr unlimited kms warranty which cost around rs 3500 higher
> Accessories Pack is optional, no need to go for bundled accessories. choose only what you seek

as thats the saving can expect on and nothing more.
Hope should help !!
