Dear Sir,
Please suggest the suitable car as per following requirements in chronological preferences:
1) Budget upto 10 - 13 Lacs
2) Safety (more passive safety features)
3) Rear seat comfort and specious (most important parameter, suitable for family of 5 adults, occasional long drive once a month)
4) No clutch (looking for suitable option among iMT/AMT/CVT/Torque converter)
5) Ground clearance and handling (30% Mumbai drive, 40% highway and 30% country side roads)
6) Preferably petrol engine (low maintenance and after warranty period I am planning to convert into CNG)
7) Running: approx 1000 - 5000 km per month, I am light foot driver
8) Low ownership / Maitainance cost
9) NOT interested in any fancy features like music system, sunroof, ambient light, looks … etc

Now based on your hands-on experience, please suggest a car with both positives and negatives which can cover maximum of above criteria and also ownership experience, if possible. I am big fan of your forum and part of your WhatsApp group

Dear Mahesh ji,

Greetings !!

7) Running: approx 1000 - 5000 km per month, I am light foot driver

Hope you mean 1000 to 1500 Kms a month drive,

Well, basis preferences as mentioned with highest focus on
> space for 5 Passenger on board
> passive safety as Airbags, Seat Belt Pretensioner, Build Quality.
> Convenience of Drive
> Petrol Fuel

Here in best choice basis elimination technique to shortlist best car.

Some of the available choices without Manual Clutch Pedal which meets in close zone basis Safety and Convenience Aspect are
1. Hyundai I20 Asta Option DCT
2. Mahindra XUV300 W8 Option AMT
3. Ford Ecosport Titanium Plus Automatic
4. Tata Nexon XZA Plus AMT
5. Hyundai Venue Sx Option IMT
6. Kia Sonet GTX Plus IMT Petrol

Space: However, if you take Space Aspect in consideration then
1. Hyundai Venue
2. Kia Sonet
feels quiet compact in legroom and not thus recommended if looking for spacious cabin for 5 passenger

which makes us left with 4 choices essentially as
1. Hyundai I20 Asta Option DCT
2. Mahindra XUV300 W8 Option AMT
3. Tata Nexon XZA Plus AMT
4. Ford Ecosport Automatic

Ground Clearance: However, if Ground clearance is an important criteria along with high speed handling then I20 do not fit in too.
making you left with Tata, Mahindra and Ford only.

Best Choices
XUV300 W8 Option AMT: Somehow On road price will fall in zone of 14.5 Lakh, but this is a car which comes loaded with
1. Best in class Passive Safety of 7 Airbags along with best in class build quality with highest safety score
2. Very Spacious in lot with one among few compact SUV to offer better rear seat legroom, shoulder room for 3 passengers
3. Comfort oriented suspension, will love in plush ride experience
4. Competitive Service cost

However, biggest con is
> if you plan to take on long distance travel then limited boot space of 265 Litre is a downside
> Also, on road price exceeds budget substantially to extent of 10%. Unsure, if you keen to go ahead with it.
> Lastly Petrol AMT response just feels average in city drive, to view Diesel AMT is what strength in XUV300 and should rather check it out

Ford Ecosport Titanium Plus Automatic:
Is a SUV which is infact full fledged Automatic Transmission. Has
1. Excellent headroom
2. Best in class under-thigh support with Ease of Ingress and Egress
3. High Speed Handling Dynamics, Grip feels lot better due to stiffened suspension
4. Reliable product from Ford India
5. Very Competitive Maintenance Cost

But, if you factor in
> Shoulder room
> Legoom space
then Ecosport although yes feels compact in given lot of cars.
Although legroom can be adjusted a bit by adjusting front seats basis height of passengers but 3 adults on rear seat in terms of shoulder room is still a tight fix. Depends on physique - suggest to sit in Ecosport.

Another con is that end Fuel Efficiency in 1.5 Petrol Engine is quiet limited as compared to other cars in segment. Anything around 10 Kmpl in city. 13 Kmpl on highway can be a reasonable expectation from this SUV

On road price will fall in 13 Lakh Budget

Tata Nexon XMA AMT
This SUV has lot of potential especially after an update to BS6 where
> AMT response feels lot better as against what felt in BS4
> Engine performance feels much lively in City Mode and Sports Mode is quiet engaging too with fun experience
> Proven 5 Star Safety Rating in Build Quality
> Good Legroom on Rear Seat (although shoulder room is slight challenge if you plan to accomodate 5 passenger on board)
> Very Important is that you can own this car at around Rs 10 Lakh delivering it

Yes in terms of Con
> Lacks advanced side and curtain airbags as of now
> Shoulder room space is relative limited
> Engine Noise Levels is relative higher on highway
> Tata After sales service still needs lot to be improved in
> INgress and Egress is slight a challenge - not the best if you consider for short passengers on rear seat and taller passenger on driver seat.

Overall Recommendation
See if you check in details as mentioned - none of the other car perfectly matches in requirement. However - closest match to it in preference order:-

1. Tata Nexon XMA AMT: Super Value at 10 Lakh On road with top notch rated build quality, good space, features. Although this car has its own challenges but from Price Point perspective - is a model you simply cant ignore from Value perspective.

2. Mahindra XUV300: Is Boot Space a deal breaker ? If yes then leave XUV300, else if can go ahead with it and budget seems like going overboard then rather than XUV300 W8 Option Petrol AMT, consider checking out XUV300 W6 AMT as option and if seek lower running cost - rather than opting for CNG - i suggest to check out XUV300 W6 Diesel AMT where response feels better

3. Ford Ecosport: Depends on physique - Provided you able to accommodate to 3 passengers and ready to ignore mileage aspect. However - i dont think can ignore fuel efficiency and yes shoulder room space is definite compact.

Last - CNG as retro fitment not recommended in any of the cars listed above.

To view, should look at
1. Tata Nexon XMA AMT - at 10 Lakh On road - recommended pick basis value perspective
2. XUV300 W6 Diesel AMT - at close to 13 Lakh on road

and in case you seek no compromise on passive safety then Ford Ecosport Titanium Plus Automatic

Hope should help !!

Thank you sir for your detailed review..... I am satisfied by the depth of observations and practical suggestion...

I have shortlisted XUV300 W6 AMT for test drive.....Its okey for me to have liner power delivery in petrol variant, But I will also check for Diesel version....
I have taken test drive for Venue, Sonet and Tata Nexon are observations exactly in-line with what you have mentioned in your response....

Lastly, my father is big fan of Maruti....
Can you please share your expert opinion on XUV300 W6 AMT Vs Maruti Suzuki S Cross Delta Automatic ?
Both falls under same price bracket and ground clearance is also same. I have gone through your review and it says both have good rear seat comfort...
If I want to make a choice in these two, what will you suggest based on +vs and -vs. I want to use the car at least 10 years.
Big Thanks for your un-biased comparison.. definitely recommended to the readers.....

Hi,

First of all if you considering S Cross Automatic
Should rather consider Zeta Automatic as against Delta - been price difference is mere around Rs 40K and you get
> Recline angle adjustament on rear seat
> Front Fog Light
> Convenience of rear view Camera, Height adjustable driver seat, armrest on rear seat
> Touchscreen with Android Auto / Apple car play for live navigation

S Cross is a great choice, but kind note that suspension is been stiffened up with good highway dynamics
Performance is impressive, highly reliable

But only apprehension to it is lack of NCAP ratings and fact that heartect chassis platform did not perform very well in other Maruti Suzuki Cars. Had rating available - i would have no apprehension in recommending S Cross

Adding on no ESP in a car which is what costing in close to 13 Lakh and going to use in for highway is another sad aspect.,
Yes build of car is fair good, but that felt on Seltos too.

Anyhow - point is as you specific asked for passive safety aspect - some apprehension to it
Hope should help
