Dear Sir,

Greetings of the day!

I am Hrishikesh Palamkar, A mechanical engineer Staying in Pune, working in the automotive industry for the last 5 years. Although I am yet to buy my first car I am a keen observer and have a special interest in the automotive industry for the last 10 years

After a long wait, I have decided to purchase my first car. You will find my requirements from below points
I have a budget of 10 Lacs max for On-road price in Pune
Need a car for a family of 5 adults. 5 adults of medium size should sit well in the car, if not comfortably.
Decent mileage, if not best, with not too expensive maintenance cost
Good build quality for family, the car should stay planted with good ride and handling dynamics.
Not specific with any kind of gimmicks like touchscreen size or unnecessary chrome or sunroof etc, but the fundamentals should be correct
My monthly running of car would be maxing 800 km with 60% use in city and 40% use on Highway
We have a 14-year-old Maruti 800 which will be exchanged for a new one
Now coming to the cars that I have finalized
S-cross Sigma- This is a base variant and the showroom will fit all required accessories at a cost of 50k INR. The on-road cost is 10.41 lacs. of course MSIL is giving a very good price of 55k with an exchange bonus for our old M800. This is an option where I am stretching the budget looking at specs
Hyundai i20 Sportz petrol- on-road cost of 9 lacs in Pune. Not able to get good offers from showrooms for exchange of our old car. The car looks premium, but is it worth the cost considering my above 6 requirements?
Baleno zeta/Glanza G with mild-hybrid- Glanza G mild hybrid is costing 8.80 lacs, and without mild-hybrid it is 8.40 lacs. However, Should I be concerned with this car for build quality for my family?
Volkwagen Turbo special edition- It is Vento's comfortline variant with TSI engine at on road cost of 10 lacs. Now, this is where my heart is going looking at overall quality of VW. I have driven VW polo in Germany for 6 months and it is sheer beauty to drive on autobahn at 130kmph. But is vento a good choice as a family car considering its mileage and maintenance?\
Lastly Hyundai Aura CNG- Basically this is the choice of father considering cost of fuel and costing us 8.50 lacs
I need your guidance on what could be the better choice among these cars.
And yes I am open to any other recommendation from you as well.

Awaiting support from you.

Hi Hrishikesh ji,

Greetings !!

Hyundai Aura CNG
Starting with Hyundai Aura CNG. Although is a great choice in terms of
> Factory Fitted CNG
> Low Running Cost
> Very Affordable in Price Segment
> Hyundai Reliability, after sales
> Good in City Drive-ability

But is also important to note that
> Highway Dynamics feels very average
> Pickup Performance is just average

As you referred a car where in seek
Good build quality for family, the car should stay planted with good ride and handling dynamics.

To view - this is a big concern on Aura in terms of
> Build (after Nios scored 2 Star)
> Highway dynamics is a big question

So i wont really recommend Aura for need as specified

Baleno zeta/Glanza G with mild-hybrid- Glanza G mild hybrid
Although very spacious car with good highway dynamics as firm suspension
Reliable and Fuel Efficient and Fun to drive

But rightly said - a big question on build qualty and somehow black interior feel claustrophobic
To view basis requirements as specified - there are better cars than Baleno / Glanza for need requirement

Hyundai i20 Sportz petrol
Although the most spacious one, good features, lot improved over previous gen in styling
But highway feel and feedback in 1.2 Petrol in Steering Dynamics - am not optimistic on I20 handling
Despite kerb weight shed off by 100 Kg - well will leave a lot to be desired

Again wont consider it

Volkswagen Vento
A great all rounder car in terms of almost everything
But as you referred that requirement is of 5 Members - well 3 on rear seat would be slight tight
This car is best suited for 4 adults and 1 Kid
Rear Center floor hump and slight firm back on rear center seat makes it a tight fit

Well there are 2 cars should look out for
1. Maruti S Cross Sigma: Although the only missing point is that S Cross based on heartect Chassis Platfrom and this platform cars as used in Ertiga did not scored well with 3 star rating. But considering fact that
> S Cross has superior highway dynamics
> S Cross Handling aspect
> Space, Features

Its a no nonsense car and S Cross Sigma Petrol is a great value buy at price point at which is offered

2. Mahindra XUV300 W6: If flexible to increase budget by a Lakh then experience in XUV300 Petrol
You will love in every bit of this car in terms of
> Safety
> Performance
> Rear Seat Comfort
> Handling Aspect
> PLush Ride Experience
and trust this is the best product of Mahindra in last 10 years observed as a great package

Suggest to experience these 2 cars. Overall recommendation
> If cant exceed in budget then S Cross Sigma is a great value choice
> If flexible on budget aspect - experience in XUV300 W6 Petrol - a great all rounder choice

Hope should help !!

Sir, as per your recommendation I checked XUV 300 W6, but here I won't be able to stretch the budget. I am looking for 10k EMI max. with 2 lakhs Downpayment
i20 Sportz petrol and Altroz XZ Petrol and Amaze V petrol costs nearly the same and within the budget of my monthly EMI, Which one would you recommend among these considering the above requirements as asked in the main question?

Pls find inputs

> Honda Amaze: Been steering feedback is very average on higher speed and soft suspension is not best suited in combination
Although is a great choice for city, but been majority of usage on highway - is not the best for same

> Tata Altroz : Although a top notch pick in handling dynamics and steering feedback with well tuned suspension
But, biggest downside is 1.2 Litre, 3 cylinder engine performance which what takes away the experience
Been budget on your side wont really recommend this pick too

> Hyundai I20 : Yes a better pick in terms of space, engine performance seems good, fuel efficient, low maintenance, reliable and loaded with good features. Although Handling dynamics feels average in terms of steering feedback and build quality has a question to it (been presuming it as 3 star as NCAP not available and fact Hyundai owned Kia Seltos scored 3 star). Still I20 Sportz is a better pick as against Amaze and Altroz in overall requirement perspective

Hope should help !!
