Hello sir ,finally i have zeroed down to honda city diesel and mg hector diesel. i know both belong to different segments but willing to shell extra for hector if it provides a more plush ride than honda city (which i felt after test driving both).only worried about hector long term reliability, maintenance, will i get okish mileage and fuss free ownership.

I plan to keep the car for 10 years. Also if hector is the choice which shield package to go for?

Greetings !!

See to make it easy for you
Honda city - weakpoint is 1.5 Idtec
MG Hector - strong point is 2 Litre Multijet Diesel Engine

Although a great choice in space, features, styling and Diesel Engine feels refined in BS6 as used to be in few years back but when you pitch it against MG Hector.

Hector 2 Litre Diesel Engine with 170 PS Power and 350 NM Torque feels like a notch up as against 1.5 Idtec Diesel engine as used in City with mere 100 PS Power and 200 NM Torque
Pls note that this 2 Litre Fiat sourced diesel engine is same engine as used in Harrier and Compass too

There is definite lot more excitement with punchy power delivery in mid range in MG Hector

Although Honda city is very spacious, but
> Low seating
> Limited Headroom space
> Uncomfortable Rear Center seat

is a deal breaker for many and MG Hector gains in with easy ingress, egress and feels better in space front. Adding recline nature of rear seats with better headroom make it more comfy in cabin

Well City soft suspension handling dynamics are not best and somehow neither is for MG Hector too, but Hector handling definite feels a notch ahead as against City especially on higher speed. But in day to day city use - Honda city soft suspension with relative lower turning radius is better suited if maximum usage is within local usage.

Overall - if given a pick Hector stands better in terms of
> Punchy Mid range
> Superior Space
> Relative better ride and handling dynamics

Now in terms of queries on Mileage, Maintenance
See City will anyday be more fuel efficient and rather would be much more fuel efficient due to
> Smaller tyres
> Lesser weight
> Lower center of gravity
> Diesel engine tuned for mileage

With Hector been almost 35%+ higher weight with wider tyres, raised ground clearance can never match in fuel efficiency as set by Honda city
We expect City end fuel efficiency to be atleast 25% better than Hector in similar conditions (been mileage based on many factors)

However, dont be worried of Maintenance- MG India offering Classic and premium service plan
details on MG Hector Maintenance. For peace of mind ownership you definite have to shelve money in form of MG Hector Premium Service Plan which almost cost close to Rs 1 Lakh for 5 Years and covers
> Scheduled service
> Suspension, clutch, brake and some other common wear & tear parts

Although a classic plan too there which cost in Rs 45,000 for 5 year - but considering fact that
> Spare part prices are in unknown territory
> Long term feedback is yet awaited as car was launched less than 3 years ago

so, recommended to opt for Premium Service plan
Along with 5 year warranty from MG Motors as complimentary - this combination will what offer peace of mind

One important thing - been engine size more than 1500 cc - insurance premium especially on 3rd party insurance will remain high - almost like rs 9310 a year as against Rs 3800 a year adding on higher oD Premium too.

So, effectively yes MG Hector Diesel is definite better choice over Honda City but would be required to spend in almost like
> Rs 1 Lakh for Premium Service plan as against 5 year in City where scheduled service and few wear & tear parts would cost lesser
> Lower Fuel Efficiency to extent of 25% in similar conditions
> Higher Insurance premium on year on year

So outflow definite would be on higher side in terms of maintenance, mileage and higher insurance premium but if thats not a concern area then as a product MG Hector edges ahead of Honda city Diesel

Hope should help !!

have gone ahead and booked mg hector sharp diesel with shield program. Hopefully i will not rue my decision of going with mg hector over tata harrier as i felt the steering is light in hector, it has softer suspension(mg gave a test drive and tata showroom here didnt have a harrier test drive vehicle) ,so going by all the youtube reviews choosing comfort over handling and performance.

Be assured - Hector is a good choice
Harrier as rightly said as separate league in handling and has relative stiffer suspension as against Hector where suspension tuned towards comfort

But as against initial choice of Honda city Diesel - you picked a better product
