Hi Team

Category: Query about new car purchase

Cars in consideration as of now: I20 2020 Asta optional Petrol and Honda city 4th generation V MT Petrol.

My requirements:
1) My Budget is 12lakh rupees on road price.
2) Petrol car only
3) My usage in a month is around 1000 km, 70% in city and 30% highway, Once in 2 months will go for long trips around 1000km with family 4 elders.
4) I want keep the car for next 8 years for sure and can extend to 10 years.
5) Car brands i am not interested in are Maruti and TATA.
6) My Height is 6 feet, i test driven venue, Sonet and Verna, these cars are not suitable for my height, i feel compact SUVs are not fit for my Height and for SUV my budget will not support.
7) I am looking for feature rich cabin(practically useful) and safety is my utmost priority as well.
8) Sedan and hatch back cars i feel more comfortable than in compact SUV's as per my height.
9) Good pickup and performance is must

To conclude on my question:

I have test driven Honda city 5th generation, it is good, observed a bit engine noise in cabin and main flaw is my head is almost touchig to the roof from driver seat as well as back passenger seat, so i am not considering this, mean while i got an idea as they are selling 4th generation city along with this, i tried sitting inside and it is comfortable for my height.

Bu only thing stopping me to purchase Honda city 4th generation is 15 inch alloy, which is putting me in cross roads whether to purchase or not and features a bit dated as well, i want to keep it for 8 years if i go for it, is it good decision to go with honda city 4th generation V MT petrol or should i choose I20 asta optional top model.

can we upgrade tyre size for honda city 4th generation V MT? if yes what is the exact size of tyre to upgrade and which brand?
OR
Shall i upgrade to 16 inch alloy wheels which they are giving in top models? and what is the impact on mileage and vehicle warranty and performance? if yes, what will be the cost i need to spend on.

Also you can suggest any other sedan or hatch.

Thank you

Greetings !!

As a product per se is important to understand that

Honda City
> Is what an iconic product with legacy of over 21 years and depicts better social status as full size mid sedan as against Premium Hatchback I20
> 1.5 Litre IVtec Petrol Engine has lot of grunt and superior Power Delivery in Mid Range as against 1.2 Litre Engine of I20
> Full Size Spacious Cabin with a perfect fit for 4 Members of Family with very comfy front and Rear Seat
> Interior Feel Upmarket in Honda City with Piano Black Finish on Dash feels lot better against Hyundai I20
> Although both Hyundai I20 and Honda City 4th Gen comes with light steering and not best in high speed handling but if to compare both - City definite has an edge (especially the fact which you taking correctly of upsize tyres for better planted ride experience)

Hyundai I20
To view - key USP of I20 over City is
> Better Active & Passive Safety ESP, Side & Curtain Airbags, TMPS
> Lifestyle Feature Experience of Electric Sunroof, Bose Speakers, Superior Infotainment as against City 4th Gen
> Yes Scheduled Service cost would be lot lower, While City 4th Gen comes with bi-annual service interval (6 month / 10,000 Kms), I20 comes with annual service interval (1 year / 10,000 Kms). If average yearly running to be 10,000 Kms - expect I20 paid service bill to be almost 40% as against Honda City yearly paid service

Now coming to your Query as asked
You got yes moderate 30% usage on highway. Consider upsize to R15 195/60 which will give in
> Almost 12% more Width delivering superior high speed handling
> Circumference deviation of less than 1% - means odo deviation would be minimal (if driving at speed of 100 - odo may show in 98)

Refer Car Tyre Calculator
So your concern can well be taken care of with superior high speed dynamics and you can retain alloys - only cost would be buyback price of old tyres and new tyres (make a deal with near tyre shop) - making a marginal expense of Rs 10K to 12K for set of 4 tyres

If you upsize alloys too - then would be a costly affair and will come at cost of fuel efficiency too
R15 195/60 would be best fit and impact on fuel efficiency wont be that high (at best max by 1 Kmpl)

Warranty Impact
Although these tyres wont impact car warranty to best of our view, but if anything happens to suspension component like shocker / lower arm / bush / link rod (even if due to manufacturing defect ) - blame would be put on tyres upgrade.

Thats a fact should be aware of.

Overall
If you seek to enjoy Manual Transmission and a car which is what
> Very Spacious
> Proven Ivtec Petrol Engine
> All Standard Essentials
> Yes Better Steering feedback than I20
> Handling and Grip will also improve after tyre upsize
> Social Status Quo Factor

Honda City 4th Gen is a better pick of the lot and V is good call to consider in if you seek I20 Asta Option (if not too much concerned on highest number of active and passive safety specs)

Alternate Choice: Test Drive Volkswagen Vento Highline TSI Petrol
> Available at same price as of Honda City V
> Sturdy Build and Best in class high speed Handling, Steering Feedback
> Suspension dynamics feels better sorted as against Honda city and Hyundai I20
> Much Superior Mid range - strong mid range punch (yes a turbo lag is there under 2000 rpm - if you need to mask same then experience Skoda Rapid Rider Plus Automatic where the lag is masked and feels even more drive-able)
> Basis your height - ingress, egress and headroom is better. Yes rear seat is slight on compact note but rear seat are positioned well in terms of Recline angle and rear seat has better legroom than compact SUV.
> Very Performance Oriented - would love in Pickup and a true enthu car
> Available with 4 Year Warranty - which is what extendable to 6 Years
> Post discounts and negotiations would get car at a price lower than City V Model
> Service cost and spare part prices in recent years been made very competitive and expect Vento service cost to be actually lower than Honda city

So, to answer in
> In between Honda City V and Hyundai I20 - recommendation is City V
> Alternate to City V if seek superior high speed handling, steering feedback - check out Vento Highline TSI or for added convenience and to mask turbo lag - explore Skoda Rapid Rider Plus Automatic

Hope should help !!

Hi Gagan

Just want to know about car Insurance.
Apart from comprehensive, third party, zero depreciation, do we need to go for engine protection, consumables and no claim bonus etc?
How important they are, could you please advice on this.

Thank you

Hi,

Hope you aware of coverage terms
I sugggest to check on Car Insurance Coverage Terms

Essentially are these add on covers which all depends on risk appetite of individual.
Having engine protection, consumable just cost rs 4000 to 5000 and when one buy car costing over a million - amount is insignificant and to most offer peace of mind that a coverage is taken for an emergency situation.

But not everyone needs in - it all depends on risk appetite on how safe driver is and what are his thoughts
Personally speaking - i have not taken any such add on covers and not zero depreciation even for my car ever. Although this may not be correct approach or may not be ideal - but as referrd earlier it all depends on risk appetite and driving pattern of individual.

Hope should help !!

Thank you for your quick response, i will definitely go for it.

Still i have few questions in my mind.

1) i have taken car loan from HDFC bank and if i go for HDFC ERGO car insurance, do i still need to take HDFC loan suraksha which is around Rs 6761?
2)1 Year PA Cover for Owner Driver for Rs 15 Lakh (is this sufficient) or both are same and we can opt any one, I mean either we have to take loan suraksha or 1 year PA cover for owner driver for RS 15lakhs?
3) If i take loan suraksha then, PA cover not required? as loan suraksha is for 5 years and one time payment

please suggest me on this

Hi,

1) i have taken car loan from HDFC bank and if i go for HDFC ERGO car insurance, do i still need to take HDFC loan suraksha which is around Rs 6761?

Nop its Voluntary. Suraksha scheme is like insurance of loan and 100% customer discretion

2)1 Year PA Cover for Owner Driver for Rs 15 Lakh (is this sufficient) or both are same and we can opt any one, I mean either we have to take loan suraksha or 1 year PA cover for owner driver for RS 15lakhs?

Both are different. PA Cover is personal accident cover where in event of death in a road accident, insurane company pays rs 15 lakh to family of deceased and is mandated by Government while Suraksha involves disability or death and thus will cover in outstanding loan by insurance company

3) If i take loan suraksha then, PA cover not required? as loan suraksha is for 5 years and one time payment

PA Cover is what mandatory as per norms,

Thank you Gagan for your valuable support. running short of time and your quick response will be highly appreciated.

Before i go for the HDFC ERGO insurance you have proposed and i am also willing to, i have few clarifications

I got loan sanctioned from HDFC bank for my new car.
Loan i took on my wife name( i hold a two wheeler to avoid 2% extra tax), so car will be registered on her name
1) She don't know driving and no DL obliviously.
My question here is

PA cover for 15 lakhs it says OWNER DRIVER does it mean owner(car is registered) driving the car or Owner and diver(it can be any person ), here i am the co-applicant(paying the emi) and i will be driving the car at all times and no other driver.

confusion is if accident happens to me(as a co-applicant) and driving the car, will the PA cover applies to me as well? because i am not the owner but the co-applicant.

if that is not the case and co-applicant is not covered and i am driving the car every time so do i need to include any add on?

Please clarify, so that I can go-ahead with the insurance as i am planning for car delivery this Monday i.e 15march.

Hi

PA Personal accident cover in name of Owner Driver means person in whose name car is registered and driving will be insured with personal accident cover of rs 15 Lakh as per terms and conditions of Insurance.

Been car would be registered in your spouse name, so coverage wont be applicable to you
Alternative is to have
> separate personal accident coverage
or
> can take in upto Rs 2 Lakh PA Cover for 1 unnamed passenger which can be added which will increase premium to Rs 354 including GST

Hi Gagan
Appreciate your quick response

Today I visited dealer and told him that I am taking insurance from outside which cost me 35000 and told him all the covers I am getting as you proposed and asked him to match,

Dealer quotation is 55000 for insurance.
Surprisingly he told me that he can give me discount of 20k I mean my quotation of 35000 and his quotation 55000, the difference amount.
But the discount he will give on ex- showroom price, means he will reduce 20k on ex showroom price.

What is the impact? How it impacts me,? Is it do any harm to me in future? Whether to accept it or not?

Delivery is on Monday, I have not accepted it, but told him I need time to decide

Need support to make a right decision here
Please advice

Hi,

Sorry unsure on how will dealer reduce Insurance on Ex-showroom Price
Insurance discount, if any has to be reduced from Insurance Premium and not from ex-showroom Price.

ANy discount on car, if there can be reduced on ex-showroom price, but if specific to insurance then Insurance premium needs to be reduced in.
Thats what is a fair and clear deal, anything which deviates from above seems like something fishy on same.

Thank you gagan
Let me know if I can go through the link you have shared and take policy.
I think I can only have engine number and chasis number Or what else I need to provide as it is new vehicle and not yet Registered and registration happens after insurance only.

Also please let me know how much it takes to generate insurance policy as I have car delivery tomorrow before that I need to provide them insurance copy.

Thank you
