Hello Gagan Sir,

I am huge fan of your work on YouTube. I really like your honest and practical opinions for all things related to cars. I can certainly say it's one of the most useful autocar channels I've come across.

Today, I am seeking your advise between Nexon XZ petrol and Ecosport Titanium 2021 Diesel. I have actually been researching for last one month and have found these two cars to be most fit for my requirements in Compact SUV segment. I was owning an i20 sportz diesel earlier with 1.4L option. So, I am looking for more fun to drive car than that for sure.

Although I had a cap of 10L on my budget but seeing the VFM variant of ecosport titanium Variant in 2021 with loaded safety features, I am actually in a huge confusion now.

Coming onto requirements of car:
Running of car would be around 10000-12000 kms per year which includes 3-4 trips of about 1000 km and some 6-8 short trips of 400 kms along with most usage in small town in haryana with very limited traffic.

Something we are looking for most:
Safety, Driving Pleasure, Ride Comfort, Rear comfort on outstation trips( Family of 4 adults - all between 5'8 - 5'11), Easy Handling

We were also wanting to go with latest designs and so was more inclined towards Nexon, but have found no issues practically with ecosport as well. So, not sure how much preference or relevance should be given to this particular factor of latest design and how it might impact in future. We might keep the vehicle for 7-8 years just like other old ones. Will this factor impact resale value given that ecosport may definitely be revised in near future?

I did test drive Ecosport couple of time and found it lovely, but could not test drive Nexon petrol as dealership was not having it for demo, took Nexon diesel for a drive and although it was good but felt little vibrations at 100+, not sure if it was demo vehicle that was like this. I guess what I want to know is, How's the driving pleasure of Ecosport vs Nexon for someone who's coming from a 1.4l diesel in i20 sportz? What would be more fun to drive?

One thing that also comes to mind is I am saving almost 1 Lakh when taking Nexon XZ petrol but will that 1Lakh saved be spoiling the fun against Ecosport diesel or would it be equally fun to drive Nexon petrol as well? On the other hand, I believe I can save some fuel cost on diesel against that one lakh.

What I could see so far is that both these cars tick all the boxes for me. But, I am doubtful if I will be missing out on driving pleasure, fit & finish and great VFM deal (of titanium ecosport) by choosing Nexon over ecosport, whereas on the other hand I feel I might be compromising on latest generation design and rear as well as ride comfort by choosing ecosport over Nexon.

So, considering all these factors please let me know what should be the ideal choice. Please let me know your thoughts on this. And if there are any other aspects I should consider in choosing one of the two. Also, if there are any other options or any other variants that I can consider for my requirements.

P.S. : looking only for Manual options.
Getting car in next few weeks is also one minor factor.

Looking for your support to come out of this huge confusion that I've created for myself.

Thanks and Regards,

Lakshay Anand

Greetings !!

Tata Nexon Petrol as what introduced in 2020 in BS6 State is a much improved vehicle as what used to be 2 years back basis
> Engine Performance pickup especially city mode is much more better and yes sports is absolute fun
> Engine NVH is better as against used to be in BS4
> Improved safety of ESP, Traction control

You will definite find Nexon good, but considering some more facts you will find Ecosport even better
> Ecosport is having gem of performance in Diesel and feels lot more punch right from 1500 rpm, feels like a better upgrade over existing I20
> Superior Engine NVH Levels as against Nexon, even though one is Petrol and second is Diesel but Ecosport Engine noise levels seems lesser as against Nexon on higher speed too
> Although Nexon has good high speed dynamics, but Ecosport feels even better in high speed handling. Your loing trips journey would be in a car with best in class handling and also with running cost which can be like 25% lesser as against Nexon Petrol
> Yes improved features in Ecosport in Titanium Diesel including lifestyle one Sunroof can feel better while on the go on highway

Howvever where Nexon gains is
> Marginally more legroom space in rear, although to be honest we love Ecosport for rather easier ingress and egress and somehow better under-thigh support in the car
> Yes has Android Auto and Apple car play where can pair phone and use it for live navigation experience.
> Has placebo effect of Rear AC Vents
> Clutch which is relative on stiffer note in Ecosport Diesel as against Nexon petrol

But.
> From Performance Aspect
> Lower Running Cost
> Superior High Speed Handling
> Feels better sorted in 4 cylinder Diesel Engine as against 3 Cylinder Petrol and yes high speed engine noise level
> To an extent will rate Ford Cars a notch ahead in reliability as against Tata Car

and thankfully ESP, Traction and Sunroof now added in Ecosport Titanium Diesel makes it what super value.

In terms of concerns on missing on latest generation of Ecosport
> I would like to share a quote ''नया नौ दिन पुराना सौ दिन''
Dont worry, existing cars like Vento, Rapid, Ecosport are like well sorted and possibly will experience in niggle free ownership as these are what matured products and offers much superior niggle free ownership as what used to be in past.

> Ecosport Titanium Diesel as what on sale now comes with one among best package of aspirational, safety, convenience and styling features.

> Now available in Beige Interiors which are designed towards Family Oriented one and thankfully from 2021 the overall value appeal with ESP, Traction and Sunroof without any hike in price makes it excellent contender.

To Conclude in: Have a test drive of Ecosport and check out
> Clutch experience
> Rear Seat Legroom
If thats something which is not a concern area then Ecosport Titanium Diesel remains a top pick for need, requirement
Hope should help !!

Thanks a lot sir for your very well-detailed response. It certainly helps put up a clear perspective. I would test drive Ecosport and come up with any further questions if I have.

One things though, Is there any other car or any other variants of these two options that I can consider as well?

Hi,

As i understand that fun to drive factor is what a key element and possibly you looking for best of safety experience too
I suggest to also experience in Mahindra XUV300 W6 AMT Diesel

Now although is what AMT - but
> XUV300 Diesel AMT is one among best calibrated AMT we have in Diesel car segment
> Comes with advanced safety of ESP, Traction control (available in W6 AMT, not in manual ) and proven with 5 star safety rating with safer car for india awards
> Very fun and engaging performance with comfort oriented Suspension set up
> Impressive Multi Mode Steering and yes can bring a smile on face with the kind of convenience factor.

Would be worth a consideration if looking for trade off with added convenience factor.

Hope should help !!

Hello Gagan Sir,

What are your thoughts on Renault Kiger Turbo model. I did test drive, it seemed fun. But, I am concerned about the build quality of the car as there is no safety ratings out yet.

What are your thoughts about Kiger? Have you checked out the build quality and experience the drive yet? Should I look into that option as well as it's costing around 10 for RXZ model.

Also, how is the Ecosport Petrol Titanium compared to Nexon XZ. Which one would be more preferable choice of the two. I've experienced the Diesel variant that's fun to drive but not sure How's the petrol, especially when compared to Nexon? Also, I've heard bad things about mileage of ecosport Petrol..is that correct?

Hi,

Sorry has not experienced Renault Kiger drive as of now..But am not expecting different from Nissan Magnite.
Still reserving comments for Kiger and will see as and when can have detailed drive experience for the car.

For Ecosport Petrol - well 1.5 Litre Petrol Engine is no match to pickup as what seen in Diesel, but is a car where
> Power delivery is linear and if driving in city then Ecosport has an edge
> Despite of 3 cylinder petrol engine - engine NVH levels are better as against Nexon Petrol. Nexon has slight higher noise level on higher speed perturbed in cabin
> Suspension marginally less stiffer
> Relative Easy Ingress and Egress

Nexon gains in
> Fun on Sports Mode with superior mid range
> Can attain speed of 100 at just around 2200 rpm
> Yes Ecosport comparatively comes with lower fuel efficiency and expect slight better in Nexon in multi mode

Point is :- Ecosport Petrol although is good with its own USP, but after driving I20 Diesel with superior power delivery - Nexon Petrol or Ecosport Diesel would be a better natural upgrade in among whichever car you choose.

Hope should help !!

Thanks for suggestions sir. I am not considering Ecosport Petrol anymore.

I also came across SCross. Should we consider scross zeta as an option against Nexon petrol XZ or Ecosport Diesel titanium. It's also available in 11L onroad price. We couldn't find any faults about the car overall practically. But, we doubt it's build quality because of the Maruti Suzuki brand maybe and also maybe it lacks some advanced features or interiors like Nexon or ecosport. Please let us know your thoughts on this as well as some positives and negatives.
Also, how's the impression of Scross in the second hand market.

Although S Cross is an excellent choice and basis
> Highway Driving Pleasure,
> High Speed Handling
> Recline Rear seat angle in Zeta
> Lot of Space on Rear Seat
> Very refined 1.5 Litre 4 cylinder Petrol Engine

are all positives and car yes is very reliable and fuel efficient too.
Only downside is that S Cross is based on heartect chassis platform (which we came to know few months back from a trusted senior official) and somehow this platform as what shared with Ertiga is what rated 3 Star. Only proven Safe car from Maruti Portfolio is Brezza in 4 star

Although S Cross build feels better than Ertiga and to our experience, and S Cross on face of it feels to be more safer than Ertiga, but lack of any crash test rating of Indian S Cross and fact that
> Maruti Heartect platform scored 3 star in Ertiga and
> Surprise crash rating came in form of Seltos as 3 star
cant take chances for further recommendation of S Cross unless same been put to a test by Global NCAP.

Had the car been tested - it would have been easy to recommend this car.
But in absence of same cant recommend Maruti S Cross (especially after fact that S Cross based on heartect platform)

Hope should help !!

Thank you sir for these insights. I had no idea of this.

Sir, how are your thoughts on after market fitment? Can I buy an XE Variant of Tata Nexon and go for after market fitting of essential features like Music system, rear camera etc that I was getting in XM or XZ.

I have this concern always with fitment that my warranty may be void if go with that. What are some things I can keep in mind to choose shops for going with aftermarket? Do you have any recommendations, how to do achieve after market fitting without compromising on warranty? If so, Would be happy to know if you can recommend trusted after market shops in north india :)

I actually booked Nexon XZ few days back but now the dealership is not honoring their deliver promise and say it may take upto another month if I want XZ but they have an XE available so they are asking if I will be interested in buying that.

Nop avoid XE and thats too basic.
Also, some minor one can be go ahead with but not all - the feature differences in Nexon XE and XZ is comprehensive
Also, nothing can match factory end fitment.

Avoid XE

Hello Gagan Sir,

After much hustle, I was able to get the Ford Ecosport Titanium Diesel finally. Although could not get the desired white color due to shortage of stock everywhere. Thanks to you for your support in making this choice.

I had a question regarding the registration process, can you please help.
1. The current vehicle that we purchased will be registered with a different district than what it was for our i20. New number will be of HR12 whereas our old i20 was HR08. Is there a process for us to retain the old registration number(HR08) somehow and give the new number(HR12) to the i20. If so, what is the process and how easy or difficult it is going to be to swap numbers within different RTOs and the cost to this?

Another few queries specific to car, if you can help here:
1. Whenever I park the car I get a constant low beep sound for about 60-90 seconds after turning the ignition off. I am unable to find what is this and what's the purpose of this? Would you know what is this sound?

2. While driving I sometimes get a warning (iphone like notification) in between and I am unable to find what is that for. This is definitely different than the speed alert warning, seat belt reminder. Also, this warning is not specific to speed or gear the car is in. It suddenly comes every once in a while without any light on the MID as well. This is not related to rpm meter also what I have experimented so far.

I have gone through booklets also but haven't found anything yet that answers why these two sounds come.

Please help me with these queries if possible.

Thanks again for helping me make an excellent choice. Really enjoying the vehicle so far.

Hi Lakshay

Congrats buddy for your new Car. Great choice !!
Number portability is allowed, but provided Old Car turned scrap and not usable and also same number can then be transferred

In given case
> HR08 pertains to Kaital and HR12 pertains to Rohtak, means both are in separate district.
> Also looks like you want to retain old car

in such a scenario - car Registration number can not be transferred

For Car related queries - am sharing you a number of Ford Dealer consultant
Her name is Mehak - 72900 96143. You can give my reference - she will assist on same

Hope should help !!

Thanks Gagan sir for providing me the reference. I will get in touch with Mehak mam to clear on the car doubts.

Coming onto the number scenario:
- We are selling the i20 to a known person and not intending to keep it with us.
- Now, Ecosport will be having HR12 number and I20 is HR08 number.

We are intending to keep HR08 number on the Ecosport and give the HR12 number to the I20 and then sell the I20. Both vehicles are on the same person name as of now.

Can we swap numbers in this case as both are in different districts?

Hi,

Here is information on same in this slight old post Transfer Old Number to New Car

However, to best of our info - Porting number is not allowed in different district
But still - pls meet in MLO (Motor Licensing Officer) in RTO District where you seek number to be changed. Make a check

Hope should help !!
