I have bought the new Tata Harrier 2020 XZA+ and at the time of delivery i noticed an error message on speedometer, “ Drive control system fault with engine check” upon driving it acceleration was extremely low. I never expected this to happen and upon inspection the dealer came to conclusion that they accidentally filled it with BS4 fuels and as the new Harrier is BS6 it will show these faults and once you fill Bs6 fuel it will come to normal. I mean was that a genuine reply for a 25+ lakhs car ?? Below is the picture of error message. Please tell me what i can do to get this resolved.

The bs4 reason is totally wrong . You should write to the higher ups in tata for a clarification on the issue . As it is a brand new car with only 29kms on the odo. Has the CEL gone now after complaining or is it still there ?

Hello,

Thats shocking for a new Automatic Car driven just 29 Kms on odometer to get Drive Control System Fault
To me it looks like a problem with Transmission Control Module or Fuse gone bad

Also - why in the world dealer filled in BS4 Diesel in this BS6 Harrier.
Tata Motors intentionally delayed launch as BS6 Diesel not available throughout. As referred in Harrier BS6 Owner Manual - maximum sulphur content should not exceed .001% and BS4 fuel has sulphur levels of .005%.
Using BS4 fuel in BS6 Harrier can cause damage to Engine components of car

However, to disclaim the error as referred in instrument cluster definitely not looks like due to BS4 but seems more like Transmission Control Module. Do update in findings from Tata Motors as spending 20 Lakh+ and such issue is certainly a big downer.

This same things also comes to my newly purchased Harrier XZ+ manual transmission.. I have purchased my car on 29th and on showroom the car failed to started. They told me that it’s battery is low may be due to some light might remained on.. I aggred and they gave it to me by jump starting it with another car.. After that I drove 100 kms total reading on odo was 125 and it shown DRIVE MODE MALFUNCTION and then after turning the car off It didn’t started.. Since then Iam in theri workshop more then my house.. My starter was found burnt they chnged the starter still battery not charging. The alternator is giving out put of only 12.6 voltage and they are saying it is normal output but I read everywhere that 13.4 is required to charge a battery.. And there is a battery sensor in car after removing it’s fuse alternator gives 13.4 volts and above.. I am completely stressed after spending 21 lacks Iam in workshop from the same day of delivery.. What to do

Hi Narayanan CS,

Very shocking to hear that... How is it running now? Have you asked for the replacement of the vehicle?

I went to spiti( altitude 4000mt+)
And the car showed same errors.
There was no power to the engine. We got stuck on the too of kunjgan top( something like this) there was no network and at night the temp was -5. I was not able to change the drive mode and rpm never reached beyond 1000. After trying for a while we stoped. With the help of a random guy (who is a friend of chacha chachi) we reached Manali. When we contacted tata motors they told us that the tow car will come in 2 days And provided no explanation about what could be the reason for drive failure. We booked but they cancle twice. Today they are comming to get the car. Lets see what will happen.

This same problem has occurred on my Tata Harrier XZ+ about 6 times and I have driven only 6000 km .....it always happens when I drive a car at low rpm and the car suddenly shuts down due to low rpm ....then again when I restart my car it says drive mode malfunction....and no mode works now.....all lights turn on and even eco and sports mode don't work....and even the car doesn't go above 80 kmph....i car doesn't pic up and very low power delivery.....don't know why maybe because of miss fire in the engine.....have taken my harrier 6 times to the service station and they always just reupdate some software using OBD....and it takes almost 2 hours out there..... their technicians are not trained at all to be honest!!!....IF ANYONE HAS SOLUTION TO THIS PLEASE LET ME KNOW

Oh there seem to be really impacted car users here. All who are getting the drive mode malfunction issue, there is a simple fix for it.

Go to any of ur local garage and get ypur brake switch adjusted. If the the brake switch remains engaged ur car will throw the drive mode malfunction error.

The brake switch is like something u have on a bicycle brake. Just adjust the threads in such a way that the brake switch engages a second late after ur brake pedal is pressed. The brake switch is only for ur brake lights it will not make any changes to ur cars braking ability.

If ur brake switch remains engaged it will not let you change the drive modes.

If the brake is engaged the car realizes that ur braking And will not allow u to uptune or downtune the engine performance to avoid any mishap of sudden boost of Acceleration or change in the way brake apply in wet rough and sand mode.

If it fixes ur issue please leave me a note or email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Got this problem of Drive Mode Malfunction with my XZA+ Dark Edition 6th time. Pathetic response from service and Tata higher authorities. Only option left is to take the legal way and I am doing it!

I Have faced the same issue I had contacted my nearby service centre in Chennai. They explained to me that this Happens as a safety feature it disable drive modes and reduces power so u wouldn't react out harshly. So when even my engine stalls and an error throws up
1. Stop ur car aside the road
2. Engage Handbrake and put ur can in Neutral
3. Swith of ignition
4. Switch it on back again
5. It should work without any problem.

It worked for me and my friend
