My petrol car is about 9-10 years old and its ECM has failed second time thus immobilising it First it failed within 5 years and now again within 3-4 years. It is costing a fortune. What could be wrong?:(

Some of the common reasons for failure of ECU
> Was your car ever been damaged in flood reason as the wiring harness has led moisture entered in ECU causing damage to it
> Any after-market accessories installed having poor wiring harness causing issue to ECU
> Car Battery was discharged and the car was jump started with wrong connection done to battery causing failure of ECU

If none of above is true, then was the ECU last replaced was from company or from after-market
If from company then it needs expert check to identify the failure cause through in person inspection

Hope should help !!

If jump started with wrong connection, will it cause immediate failure or failure after many years is also attributable to this. This or any other reason though is not there in my case. Original ECU of my car failed after an accident. It was replaced with new by company free of cost in 2016. This is second failure although none of your mentioned reasons occurred. :) What to do? Can I sell car as is which is otherwise in superb condition. Company will charge Rs 45000 to replace ECU. Scrapping yields Rs 18000 only.
