My relative exchanged his old Maruti 800 for an Alto almost 1 year back from a reputed dealer. The person to whom he has sold the car to, hasn't transferred the ownership and my 75 year old relative is getting sms after sms about the car being involved in accidents and traffic violations. The dealer is saying that the buyer doesn't respond to their phone calls. Please advise.

Hello,

Its utmost important to get RC Transferred, else been the fact remains as
> Ownership of car as per RTO records will still show in name of seller
> All Traffic Offence, Fines will end up as responsibility of seller

Been selling car without ownership change is not considered sale, and in recent past there were court orders too
Refer - Used Car Sale Purchase Risk

Now in query mentioned - as a car dealer is involved - the dealer must have had given you an under-taking that all responsibilities, risks would be his onus. Suggest to take it strongly with him and also get Manufacturer Involved

In case of transfer not done, you can file Police compliant if you suspect any illegal activity with the car.
Hope should help !!
