Hello Sir,

My question is related to a 2nd hand diesel car purchase. Requirements are as -
1. I am planning to use it for next 2 - 2.5 yrs (max). (My usage would be around 15k-18k per annum, so would be driving max 50k kms.).
2. My budget is Rs. 5 lacs.
3. I intent to go for a powerful motor & milege, hence prefer a diesel engine.
4. I like sturdy and robust cars. So not considering Marutis/Hyundais.

Based on these, I think I following would be good options -
1. VW Polo/Ameo
2. Skoda Rapid
3. Fiat Punto

SO, please guide me on -
1. Will it be a good option to go for VW/Skoda/Fiat, if a car is 5-7 years old & upto 80000 kms driven.
>> What would be a general condition for a VW/Fiat car after 5-7 yrs & upto 70-80k kms? (expecting a single owner with decent/moderate drive style).
2. Maintenance costs - What would be the maintenance cost of these cars, as the age & mileage are increasing? The period is of 15000 kms, but would cost be more?
3. Wear n Tear factors - I heard that the VW & Fiat Diesel engines are build to last 1.5 -2 Lac kms. Is this true? Also, apart from engine, any other major wear n tear factor for these cars?
4. Any other option for car you have for me or any additional suggestion, Please?

Thanks,
Anurag, Pune.

Hello,

Pl find below some pointer

1. Avoid Fiat

2. Volkswagen India introduced Polo in 1.5 TDI Diesel Engine in around 4 years back (July 2014)
Earlier it used to come in 1.2 Diesel engine which was not impressive, so if care for Polo - try to get 2014 July and later.

3. Scheduled Maintenance cost is around rs 11K to 12K

4. In Used car market - utmost importance is on service history, how well the car maintained and any known issues in car
If considering VW - Skoda - just before making a purchase call - would recommend to get car inspected from VW or Skoda workshop as the case may be to rule out any unwanted repairs or failing parts.

Hope should help !!

Hello Sir,

Thanks for your expert views.

I though about it. And am now thinking that instead of going for a 2nd hand car (for obvious risks), should I go for a new one with basic features.
My calculation was like -
Used car - Buy - 5 Lacs, after use of 2.5-3 yrs., the selling cost max 2 lacs. for a 3rd hand car (Not considering the maintenance cost)
New car - Buy - 6 Lacs, after use of 2.5-3 yrs., the selling cost around 3.5-4 lacs (approx).

The cost advantage would be for a new car. Also the hassle free & very less costly maintenance.

So I was searching for some new cars like -
1. Ford Freestyle Ambiente 1.2 - 5.83 On-road, Pune
2. Tata Tiago XT(O)/XZ - 5.7 on road

So would you please advise me on -
1. The cost calculation as mentioned above - New vs. used - Would it make sense costwise for going for a new car under 6 lacs with necessary safety & sturdy option.
2. The verdict on Freestyle - I checked Gagan sir's youtube review of Freestyle which said it is very good car.
Should I opt for Freestyle? And what could be the resale price factor?

Thanks,
Anurag.

Hello,

Although you are correct in calculations, but the prices referred as On road are of Petrol Variants
If in case the requirement is for short term of 3 years - Freestyle Ambiente definitely looks value priced at which its available

Hope should help !!
