What are the re registration norms and applicable road tax of re-registering other state car in Bangalore, Karnataka.

I have bought Honda Accord 2006 version from Mumbai for a little over 2 Lakh. As I live in Bangalore, would like to transfer the vehicle on my name. The actual cost of the vehicle is close to 25 Lakh as I suppose.

Till yesterday, Karnataka Road Tax norms were different from other States in India.

While the norms as per Motor Vehicle Act is, if other state vehicles are bought for more than a year - then only in that case, vehicle owner has to get car re-registered in new state and pay on applicable road taxes.

Here, however in Karnataka if an other state car is bought for more than a month, for whatever reason - then the owner was asked to pay Life Time Road Tax - @ around 15% of Depreciated Value of Car on an average.

Its to be noted that once road tax is paid, then owner can apply for refund of road tax paid in the first state.

Petition and High Court Order: There was petition which was filed and as per ruling given by High Court Bench - Charging road tax for a vehicle plying for more than 30 days is unconstitutional and the amendment made to Karnataka Motor Vehicle Act is different from Central Motor Vehicle Act. as applicable PAN India

Basis the High Court Order - Vehicles (2 Wheelers as Bike, Scooter or Passenger Cars) as registered outside Karnataka need not pay tax for 1 year - if the stay period is going to be less than a year

Its to be noted that Bangalore is Hub of IT Industry and many Trainees and new staff are appointed from 6 months to a year for acquaintance about systems. Even it has some renowned hospitals and people from nearby states used to visit and were caught by RTO Traffic police, if there stay exceeded 1 month

This has come as sigh of relief to several thousands, who come to Karnataka (or specifically IT Hub City Bangalore) in preventing them from paying exorbitant road tax charges

For People Bring there Other State Cars in Karnataka
Its important to prove in Period of Stay and it can be done by showing couple of documents like

> PUC Copy - the Pollution Certificate as last done in home State, date can validate
> Toll Tax Receipts in Original - Keep all Original Toll Tax reciepts in Car
> Fuel Bills - Keep a Copy of Original Petrol Bill last filled in Home State
> Stay Purpose - If you have a Job, keep Joining Date copy from Company. If coming for Hospital, keep hospital bill / admission date copy in the car

For People whose Stay Period going to be more than a Year. They need to obtain State Transfer NOC from Home Town and get car re-registered in Karnataka by paying applicable road taxes

Depreciation Slab as generally adopted by RTO Karnataka for registration of Outstation Vehicles would be as below
Ageing of Vehicle Road Tax Depreciation Slab
Less than 2 year 93% of New Car
2 to 3 year 87% of New Car
3 to 4 Year 81% of New Car
4 to 5 year 75% of New Car
5 to 6 Year 69% of New Car
6 to 7 Year 64% of New Car
7 to 8 Year 59% of New Car
8 to 9 Year 54% of New Car
9 to 10 Year 49% of New Car
10 to 11 Year 45% of New Car
11 to 12 Year 40% of New Car
12 to 13 Year 35%
13 to 14 Year 30%
14 to 15 Year 25%
