We Indian Love Unsafe Cars. Wagon R, Ertiga, Santro Crash Test Report

Maruti Wagon R, Ertiga, Hyundai Santro, Datsun Redi Go Scored Poor in Global NCAP Crash Test Rating. Report on why Unsafe Cars will remain success in India

Safety Gone for Toss; We Indian Love Unsafe Cars as Proven in NCAP Crash Test

India one among fastest growing Economies with ambition of Moon and Mars also features as among one with highest Pollution Levels and road accident casualties in the world.

Safety is bare basic and is not something which needs to be compromised. Global NCAP when started testing Indian Cars from 2014 came out with 0 Star rating of cars sold in India as

  • Tata Nano
  • Maruti Alto
  • Volkswagen Polo (without Airbags)
  • Hyundai I10
  • Ford Figo (without Airbags)
  • Maruti Swift (without Airbags)
  • Datsun Go

It was a shock and reality was in front of us. Since then, many enhancements and improvements been done (thanks to increased awareness by Automotive Websites and Government Intervention of Mandate) by incorporating Safety Features of ABS, EBD, Airbags as standard along with improving structural rigidity across Manufacturers and thanks to cars like Tata Nexon, Toyota Etios, Improvement in Polo with Airbags, Maruti Brezza, Mahindra Marazzo - all of them scored 4 star and Nexon in second crash test came out with 5 Star Safety Rating

But - still something is a big miss as in recent crash test ratings

  • Maruti Wagon R scored 2 Star
  • Hyundai Santro Scored 2 Star
  • Datsun Redi Go Scored 1 Star
  • Maruti Ertiga (despite On road prices touching 10 Lakh) scored 3 Star

at speed of 64 Kmph . Earlier a year back Swift in New Generation also scored 2 Star Safety Rating

Consumers still opt for Budget Cars yet with Poor Safety.

Thanks to priority of

  • Affordability,
  • Fuel Efficiency,
  • Low Maintenance

is what a skip given to Build Quality. All these Cars are marked Unstable after Crash Test at 64 Kmph Speed. The Build just unable to sustain the crash at 64 Kmph speed. While, we Indian drive cars at speed of 100 Kmph on highway and still crib for lower highway speed.

For Cars like :- Ford Figo Titanium Blu, Aspire Titanium Plus, Freestyle Titanium Plus. Ecosport Titanium Plus and S Model, Hyundai I20 Asta Option, Mahindra XUV300 W8 Option or Toyota Yaris which when launched with 7 Airbags as Standard had few takers for these models.

Why UnSafe Cars are Still Huge Success

Even post same is Mindset where still

» People Overspeed there car and also post on Social Media of Top Speed as Proud feel

» Unaware of Seat Belt Importance in Front and Rear Seat

» Drink and Drive Concept is still on in Tier 2 Cities

Is what going to continue with the ‘Bhed Chaal’ Concept. What the love of Masses is Affordability, Mileage and look at the average sales numbers of last 6 months

  • Wagon R - Average Sales of 12000 units per month
  • Ertiga - Average sales of 8000 Units per month
  • Santro - Average of 4500 Units per month
  • And leave aside other car sales which scored low rating of 2 Star like Swift with average sales of 14000 Units per month

Or sales of

  • Toyota Yaris with average sales of less than 200 Units
  • Ford Freestyle with average sales of just 600 to 650 units (think how many Titanium Plus model would have sold)
  • Or XUV300 sales of last 2 month drop to 2500 units (think only handful of W8 Option model would have sold at just 20%)

This all proves that we Indian love Unsafe Cars and sadly will continue for long unless Government makes a mandate to send all cars to Global NCAP or even stiffer Euro NCAP and ask Manufacturers to publish Safety Star Rating against each Model sold at time of advertisement, booking, Invoice, Delivery and a Star Rating Symbol on Windshield to let owner know that what car is he buying and overspeed can prove to endanger his life.
