MG Hector Official Review

MG - Morris Garages is debuting in India with SUV. Been SUV is what considered the fastest growing segment and is what on radar of car buyers in India - ‘Hector’ is what the name given to the first car from MG Motors

Space: To be the most spacious SUV in its class. Longest SUV in its class with Flat floor on rear, longest wheelbase in the segment and even tallest too

The Doors open wide open witn easy ingress and egress. Even the elderly will love ingress and egress as they do not need to climb as like what seen in some of the SUV. You can recline in rear seats and gets one among most comfy spacious cabin. The Boot Space is 588 Litre again the best and if you seek the most spacious car in the segment you will simply love MG Hector

Specs MG Hector Tata Harrier Jeep Compass
Length 4655 mm 4598 mm 4395 mm
Width 1835 mm 1894 mm 1818 mm
Height 1760 mm 1706 mm 1640 mm
Wheelbase 2750 mm 2741 mm 2636 mm
Ground Clearance 192 mm 200 mm 178 mm

Engine: Available in 2 Engine Options - 1.5 Litre Petrol with 143 PS Power and 250 NM Torque in 6 Speed Manual Transmission and DCT Automatic. Also is available this Petrol Engine in Mild Hybrid tune with 48 Volt Lithium Ion Battery which assist in additional 20 NM torque, engine start-stop on idling and

Been a Turbo charged Petrol engine - the turbo comes in play at around 1800 rpm and boost pickup. Although not an explosive pickup - its more a linear way and is ideal for those who love refined Petrol Engine with superior NVH Levels

Below it feels neutral. Gear Shift are sleek with light clutch, hydraulic steering feels light but has higher turning radius at 5.95 meter. Although hydraulic - steering is light and good to go in, but lacks high speed steering feedback above 100 kmph speed which otherwise seen in competition cars.

The Hybrid Petrol claims to be one among best in class mileage of 15.81 Kmpl

Hector Petrol Automatic yet to be certified - so it was not available

MG Hector Petrol Manual & Automatic Petrol Hybrid Manual Diesel Manual
Engine 1.5 Litre Petrol 1.5 Litre Petrol 2 Litre
Power 141 BHP Power  141 BHP Power  168 BHP
Torque 250 NM Torque 250 NM Torque + Additional 20 NM Torque  (48 Volt Battery will assist in regenerative braking and enhanced torque) 350 NM
Transmission 6 Speed Manual, 7 Speed Dual Clutch Automatic 6 Speed Manual 6 Speed Manual
Mileage 14.16 Kmpl (MT) / 13.96 Kmpl (DCT Automatic) 15.81 Kmpl 17.41 Kmpl

The Diesel Engine is rather more fun and performance oriented with 2 Litre Diesel Engine produces 170 PS Power and 350 NM Torque and surges in from 1600 rpm with a lot more power delivery to enjoy the fun to drive

However, the Diesel engine yes gets vocal on higher RPM and engine noise do feel like entering in cabin.

Handling: Unladen Ground clearance is 198 mm, the SUV equipped with 17 Inch Wheels - Suspension Dynamics are well sorted for Indian road conditions and are what balanced to be in between soft and stiff suspension.. ofcourse is a body roll there in the car. Been steering light its easy to drive.

But a flip side to it been a large SUV - the turning radius is on higher side along with steering feedback on higher speed is not the best for those who simply seek the best in performance

No 4x4, no All Wheel Drive in MG Hector though

Safety, Styling & Convenience Features: Love Feature loaded car you will love MG Hector - simply the best in its features list like for safety - ABS EBD, All 4 Disc Brake, ESP, Traction Control, Hill Launch along with Dual Airbags are standard in all variants and top end model equipped with Side Airbags and Curtain Airbags. Even has Tyre pressure monitoring system too.

For Aspiration -  one gets segment best Panaromic Sunroof (as the first in Mid Segment car, used to be a feature only in Luxury Cars), 360 Degree Camera, Electric Driver Seat, 10.4 Inch I Smart Touchscreen where through voice command you can play by opening or closing sunroof, change music, increase or decrease volume, driver side window down or up with over 100 commands to bring the best of experience

For Styling is Massive Chrome Front Fascia which looks simply a stunning with a luxury car like appeal and of course the big masculine looks along with LED Headlights, LED DRL with LED Tail Light looks appealing

MG Hector Model Variant Features List, Prices, Engine Performance, Details

For Music Lovers are Infinity speakers for the best of infotainment experience.

17 Inch Diamond Cut Alloy Wheels looks stunning - but slightly smaller on a SUV of this size. Possibly an option of 18 Inch Alloys could have further proportionate it better\

One disclaimer - the 10.4 Inch Touchscreen although has over 100 commands but some how the touch interface and video playback has a slight lag - its not the best in touch interface and the resolution feels very average.

Price: Well thats something an open end as pricing yet to be disclosed in. But considering in Space, Features, Engine Performance, Styling and competition cars and been an altogether new brand - anything in range of Rs 13 Lakh for Base Petrol to around 17.5 Lakh for Top End Diesel Manual can just tick the pricing to be correct for this SUV

Still - lets wait for the official pricing to see how much does MG Motor make it correct

Overall recommendation on MG Hector

Although, absence of 4x4 / no All Wheel Drive, no Diesel Automatic, not the best in touch interface experience may be slight disappointing - But - Care for Spacious, Fully Loaded Features, Powerful SUV and an SUV which is a head turner in looks and set to amaze you with the features and voice command - you are all set for MG Hector if priced sensibly by the Manufacturer
