Are you confused on Buying BS4 Car and BS6 Car in 2020. Pros and Cons of using BS4 Fuel in BS6 Car to BS6 Fuel in BS4 Car on Petrol, Diesel Range

BS4 or BS6 Car. Confusion Cleared

Auto Manufacturers in India are not only competing with each other, but are also competing against time to bring in BS-6 Emission compliant with updated technology to meet in CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) Norms.

Been the deadline as announced by Ministry of Road Transport and Highway and by Supreme Court Order - only BS6 Compliant Cars would be allowed to sell and register from April 2020 onwards, the deadline is less than 3 month away

By End December 2019, in Mass Market Below Cars are available with BS6 Compliant Engines

Segment Models With BS6 Compliant Engine
Hatchback Alto 800, S Presso, Wagon R, Swift Petrol, Baleno Petrol, Toyota Glanza, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Petrol
Sedan Dzire Petrol, Honda City Petrol
MPV Maruti Ertiga Petrol, XL6
SUV Mahindra XUV300, Kia Seltos Petrol, Diesel, Jeep Compass TrailHawk

Soon the list to be extended to many more Models are OEM Planned Dispatches for 2020 going to be BS6 Compliant Cars with very selective Models to be Dispatched in BS4 Emission Compliance in January 2020 to Early Feb 2020

Been BS4 Cars of Previous Year Lot or of 2020 Manufacturing will be up for Sale with Higher Discounts in 2020. Does it make Sense to buy BS4 Car rather than BS6 One in 2020. Here are Facts

Here are some Common Question on BS4-BS6 Fuel and Usage in 2019, 2020 and Onwards

Q. Using BS6 Fuel on BS4 Car will be detrimental to Engine:

Answer If you are in Myth that using BS6 Fuel on BS4 Car can cause problem. Well - the Sulfur Levels although getting reduced from 50 ppm from BS4 Fuel to 10 ppm in BS6 Fuel, but Refineries are going to retain in Lubrication Property of Fuel at same 460 μm microns (as Sulfur known for providing lubrication) Thus, there is no technical problem as of now known of using BS6 Grade fuel in BS4 Model been the final lubrication property remains same of Fuel despite of lower Sulfur Levels, and thus no negative impact.

Refer Report - see Lubricity Levels

Q. Using BS4 Fuel on BS6 Car can Impact Engine:

Answer: Well BS6 Fuel is available in Many Cities and will soon be standard all across Pan India from April 2020. If you refill in BS6 Petrol Car with a BS4 Fuel, then although is not the ideal scenario but car can well be driven without any kind of major issue.

However, if its a BS6 Diesel Car then due to change in Catalytic, Particulate Filter and other Engine Tuneup Changes its imperative to use in BS6 Fuel in BS6 Diesel Car. Net all - although BS4 Petrol can be used in BS6 Petrol Car without much a fuss, but for a Diesel one its recommended to use BS6 Diesel in a BS6 Compliant Diesel Car.

Q. Using BS6 Fuel on BS4 Car can improve Mileage:

Answer: Technically no impact on Mileage of using BS6 Fuel on BS4 Cars.

Q. BS6 Diesel Car will be allowed for 15 years, while BS4 Diesel Car for 10 Years:

Answer: Well, the judgement for Delhi / NCR by Supreme Court includes no such classification of differentiation basis BS Type. However, a probability of modification of order in future is also there as BS6 Compliant Car when using BS6 Fuel will emit much lower pollutants

Benefits of BS6 Compliant Car in 2019 or 2020 over BS4 Car in 2019

Although the BS-4 car can run on BS-6 Fuel, but what will happen if you defer your purchase (Buying BS6 Car over BS4)

1. Emission: BS6 Diesel Fuel is a much cleaner fuel as the sulfur levels will be lower and will emit lower Hydrocarbon, Lower Carbon Monoxide, Lower PM and Lower Lower NOX Levels. Do note that Diesel exhaust fumes are classified by WHO as Class 1 Carcinogen. Also, going with a  BS6 Diesel Car NOX Levels will come down by 70% in Diesel Car and PM Levels by upto 80%

Thus, the emissions will be relatively much lower than what emit by cars. Also your BS-6 Car will get latest Technology and updates including changes in Catalytics, Diesel Particulate Filter, Fuel Injection for better compliance to Emission. Care for Environment - you should defer your purchase call

2. Engine Performance: The Sulfur levels as known would be much lower in BS6 Fuel, thus acids as formed in Engine would be much lower. You can see yourself that as the car tends to be get old the car Engine NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) Levels increases over a period of time. Having lesser acids will ensure that car Engine NVH Levels do not deteriorate in BS6 Regime as much as seen in BS4 Regime.  Even the fuel would be much cleaner and thus care for better efficiency from your car in terms of improved Engine Oil Life, Engine Performance, Engine NVH Levels you will get all these benefits with BS-6 Fuel

3. CAFE Norms as Benchmark for Future: In near future Car Manufacturers also have to get models in compliance with CAFE (Corporate average fuel efficiency) Norms. Do note that immediately in 2020 you will not observe in improvement in Fuel Efficiency, but BS6 Compliance is the first step and only after BS6 Compliant Engine and BS6 Fuel used in then next target for Car Manufacturers would be reducing carbon footprint by improving mileage to extent of 30% as defined in CAFE Norms and would be applicable from 2022 onwards.

4. New Generation Models: New Generation Cars with improved design are in plans by Car Manufacturer in 2020. Most of the vehicle models are due for Next Generation platform and 2020 is the year which will get maximum list of such launches. Models which are poor in sales or has different engine may not likely be upgraded to BS-6 - thus giving you clear scenario of BS-6 Compliant Cars which are going to stay in long term.

Benefits of Buying BS4 Car aganst BS6 Car in 2020

1. Price Point : Only one which is the Price. Cars due to updated Technology, BS-6 Compliance, safety crash test and safety features as standard will get a Price hike which is expected to be

  • Rs 15,000 to 20,000 in Petrol Car
  • Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 Lakh in Diesel Cars

Its basic that Diesel Cars especially in Hatchback, Sedan where consumers pay money for lower running cost will have no future as On Road Price Difference in Petrol and Diesel cars will go beyond Rs 2 Lakh from 2020. Refer Report on :- Diesel cars to Discontinue post 2020

2. Lot Higher Discounts: As is 2020 Calendar Year Started, Car Manufacturers are struggling with low sales, deferred demand from buyers who seek higher discounts - thus effectively the net impact on final Price of a BS4 Car would be lot economical against BS6 Car. Do note that the car Features, Specification and Engine Performance wont change.

3. Fact that BS4 Car can run on BS6 Fuel: Car Manufacturers are offering Warranty. There is absolute no confusion that BS4 Cars can run well on BS6 Fuel. The way it has happened earlier when a transition happened from BS3 to BS4, expect no issues in driving a BS4 Car on BS6 Fuel. Car Manufacturers are offering in Extended Warranty to remove apprehensions of buyers.

Final Recommendation (BS4 or BS6)

Price is what you pay for the improved product. You get a car with Lower Emissions, Compliant with latest Fuel Standards, Superior Engine NVH Performance on medium term. BS6 Cars emits Lower Pollutants when driven on BS6 Fuel

The same may not be possible in BS4 Car when driven on BS6 Fuel.

Care for Environment - it can possibly be a better choice to buy in BS6 Car.

However - Discounts going to be make BS4 Cars highly Attractive and the fact that BS4 Car can well be driven on BS6 Fuel. With April 2020 Deadline approaching quickly - Stock Clearance Deals can even get better with every passing Week in February and March, so care more for Value Proposition in terms of Lower Price then BS4 Car can be on your Radar.

I also had plans to go for Ford Freestyle Petrol before 2020 April. However, now i have decided to go for the same car with BSV1 engine post April 2020. We can expect ~ 15,000 - 20,000 INR rise in the car price but it is always good to be Eco friendly and avoid BSIV (Of course there wont be any differences in the car quality or performance or features). But, i guess, at any given time after Feb 2020, definitely w can get a BS1V Ford Freestyle Petrol car for at least 50000 INR less than BSVI.

Hi Bhaskar,

Hyundai Elite- Asta O CVT has excellent features compared to Glanza & Baleno. But I heard from my friends that the fuel efficiency is of Elite CVT in city is only 6-7Km/L. I know you will be surprised to hear this. Baleno & Glanza are ore or less twins. Glanza from Toyato is extended version of Baleno. Both the cars have a low grade body built compared to Hyundai Elite. NVH levels of both these cars are also a bit high. I seriously do not recommend Suzukhi vehicles with auto- transmission. Pleaase do not consider Glanza and Baleno even as they come with BS6 engines. In my opinion, you better wait till March 2020 if you are not in a hurry to buy a car. You may either get good deals on 2019 cars or can get find more options with BS6 engine cars. The price difference between 2019 BS4 and 2020 BS6 would be less than 50000. There are also many car models from other manufacturers due for next generation.

I hope this info helps you.

Better go for BS6 models other cars say Baleno BS6 which is slightly costlier than Celerio BS4.Celerio is only 998 cc .You can go for Wagon R new model BS6 with AMT if you want to drivve in city .It has more space.Or choose Baleno BS6.

Wait for BS 6 engines. If you are buying petrol engine then price will hike up too 15000 to 20000, but on other hand at the time of resale you will get the amount repaid.
