Car Models to be Discontinued in 2020

Passenger Car Market is ever revolving with an attempt done by Car Manufacturers for making Products based on changing Need and Demand

Consumers in India are eyeing on Cars

» Which are Stylish and yet Safe

» Loaded with Features, Good Aesthetics, Design

and available at a Value Price Point. Gone are the days when only Mileage 'Deti Kitna Hai' used to be a differentiating Factor. Cars now part of Lifestyle and the holding Period for First Owner Cars is turning to be under 7 Years, with even most of the Owners now shift within 5 Years towards latest Feature Loaded Models.

This has led to Paradigm Shift in Car Buying. Now from 2020

» BS-6 Emission Compliance Norms getting Mandatory from April 2020

» Safety Rating will be assigned to the Vehicle

Below is List of 20 Models which can be discontinued in Year 2020 in Indian Market

» Honda BRV: Honda Brio based platform till 2018 was used in 3 Models. Brio, Amaze and BRV. With Brio been already discontinued and Amaze build on new platform and the fact that despite offering in 1 Lakh Discount Benefits in entire year, sales numbers took a sharp beating of BRV

Where SUV Segment is growing in full throttle with over 30,000 SUV sold in > 4 Meter Segment, BRV Market Share is not even 1% in it. There is a high Probability that Brio based platform can be completely axed by 2020 in Indian Market

» Mahindra Xylo - Launched in 2009, the MPV was initial success, but later on with limited updates, outdated 2.5 Litre Engine and consumers preference towards Stylish vehicles has led sales of Xylo falling to Sub 500 units. Now by March 2020, Xylo would be discontinued from Indian Market due to changing BS Emission Norms and updated Crash Test Regulations.

» Tata Zest - Tata Tigor has completely over shadowed Zest. In all recent campaigns - Tata Motors highlighting Tiago, Tigor, Nexon in Sub 4 Meter Segment and now this range to be extended by Altroz too. Seems nothing left for Zest to continue post 2020 Aprll

Tata Zest photo

» Tata Bolt - Tata Bolt seems the Odd one out after launch of Tiago, Tigor in its similar Price Segment. The range to be extended by Altroz too launching in January 2020. With Bolt Sales now in Double Digits, its likely be the end of this Multi Mode car from January 2020

» Tata Safari Storme - Post introduction of Hexa, Harrier and upcoming Tata Gravitas in Auto Expo 2020 - it can be the churning of Portfolio with Safari Storme as brand to be discontinued from Indian Market

Tata Safari Storme photo

» Tata Hexa  - Although Hexa as brand will not be discontinued from Indian Market, but Tata Motors Inhouse 2.2 Litre Varicor 400 NM Torque Engine may not be BS6 Ready by March 2020 when BS6 Compliance norms will come in

So the production can be temporarily halted, till the time BS6 Compliant Diesel Engine powers in this SUV.

Not to be missed Hexa Sales in recent month drop to its lows. See the Sales Numbers, where the Manufacturer was just able to sell cumulatively 503 Hexa Cars in last 3 months

  • 126 Units sold in November 2019
  • 229 Units Sold in October 2019
  • 148 Units Sold in September 2019

» Mahindra Verito - Mahindra is known for SUV Segment Cars and Verito will just saw the end by March 2020 in India. To be mentioned that Verito Vibe is already discontinued and now is turn of Verito

The Engines to not be upgraded to BS6 Compliant one. To be noted that from 2020 - Mahindra-Ford Partnership can focus on bringing in JV Cars in coming years

» Toyota Etios Liva - Toyota Etios is there in Indian market for close to 8 years now, but despite of Hatchback positioned in fastest growing segment - the sales numbers are not impressive  With upcoming cross badged Toyota Baleno - seems little room for Toyota to upgrade Etios Liva engine to BS6

Toyota Etios Liva photo

» Toyota Etios - Little room for Toyota Etios Sedan too. Despite been a competent Model with 4 Star Safety Rating, bigger 1.5 Litre Engine with Space and Reliability - there been no second generation of this sedan launched in India. With sales at its lows of sub 1000 units and the investment which needs to upgrade Engine to BS6 - it can just be the end of Etios by March 2020 in Indian Market.

» Volkswagen Ameo - Volkswagen Ameo when launched was pitched by Volkswagen India to compete against Maruti Dzire, Hyundai Xcent and Honda Amaze, but as per media report Ameo in actual has cannibalized sales of Volkswagen Polo and Vento. It can just end Ameo by 2020 when VW plan to launch in upgraded MQB Platform in Polo and Vento in 2020

» Volkswagen Polo Diesel, Vento Diesel, Skoda Rapid Diesel - VW Group to move away from Diesel Engines, and not only is what VW Premium Range Audi Diesel cars but even VW Regular range and Skoda Diesel Engine to be axed upon. The first to get impact is 1.5 TDI Diesel Engines as used in Polo, Vento and Rapid where all these 3 Diesel Car range will be axed by March 2020, as VW Group to likely infuse in all new 1 Litre BS6 Compliant Turbo Charged Petrol Engine in all these 3 cars

» Renault Lodgy - Renault Lodgy sales fell to all time low of double digit with last 6 month average sales is not even 50 units. Post New Generation Ertiga Launched in India as spacious 7 Seater MPV and Renault India introduced Triber in Budget MPV Segment - it can soon be the dead end of Lodgy where sales fell down to single digit in November 2019

» Maruti Alto K10 : Yes is Maruti Alto K10 to be discontinued from India post S Presso been launched. With just Rs 30,000 price gap in between Alto K10 and S Presso and been S Presso available in BS6 it can just be end of Alto K10 Cae

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 photo

» Maruti Suzuki Diesel Cars - Maruti Swift Diesel, Baleno Diesel, Dzire Diesel will all be discontinued. Even Ertiga, Ciaz 1.5 Litre Diesel Engine production to be temporarily halted in early 2020, till the time Maruti Suzuki develops BS6 Compliant Diesel Engine. Needles to mention this 1.3 DDIS Diesel will also be removed in Brezza and S Cross and these 2 Models to get in 1.5 Litre Petrol Engine

» Tata Motors Small Diesel Cars - Not only Maruti Suzuki Small Diesel Engine, but Tata Motors 1.05 Litre Diesel Engines as used in Tiago Diesel and Tigor Diesel can just come to an end by March 2020 when these Engines will not be Upgraded to BS6 Compliance in India

» Hyundai Xcent - As Hyundai India set to launch in Aura (as new Brand name of Xcent in 3rd Generation) with some major changes including 1 Litre Turbo Petrol Engine. Xcent as brand in new car segment can be axed from Indian Market by 2020

Hyundai Xcent photo

» Ford Ecosport Ecoboost - Ecosport 1 Litre Ecoboost Petrol Engine wont be upgraded to BS6 Compliance in 2020. This Performance Oriented SUV - possibly the best in Compact SUV Segment will most likely be discontinued by April 2020 in Indian Market

Ford Ecosport photo

Other Probable Models for Potential Discontinuation by 2020

» Maruti Ignis: Ignis despite been a mass market car is not able to catch attention of car buyer, as what other Maruti Suzuki Cars doing. With Wagon R in new generation been launched in Heartect Chassis Platform along with 1.2 Litre Engine, S Presso with similar ground clearance as seen in Ignis introduced with smaller engine and at a lesser price

Now if Celerio gets in same Heartect Chassis Platform along with 1.2 Litre Engine then it can possibly be the end of Ignis for Indian Market

Maruti Suzuki Ignis photo

» Hyundai Grand i10 2nd Generation: With Grand i10 Nios in 3rd Generation available, Hyundai  India continuing sale of 2nd Generation Grand i10 too at the end of December 2019.

Grand i10 Nios now is also up for sale with discount schemes, there is a strong probability that Grand i10 2nd Generation will just see its end in 2020 and only Grand i10 Nios will be what the remaining Model

Hyundai Grand i10 photo

» Hyundai I20 Active - With Venue been Launched in Indian Market and at a price where Venue base Model undercuts the price of I20 Active, also is what new generation I20 to be introduced in 2020 - it can just be the end of Active Crossover Series of I20

Hyundai I20 Active photo

If you are bother about Manufacturer Skipping Indian Market - well its a big announcement and very Sensitive Topic considering huge Investments which a Manufacturer does.

Still below are some Manufacturers with very low Sales as reported in November 2019 :-

» Nissan +  Datsun Sales was just at 1600 Units

» Fiat + Jeep Sales was just at 638 Units

Keep an eye on Changing Trends - they are not exiting from Indian Market in any way by any news. Its just the sales numbers which needs to be checked upon on regular basis.

Yes, a number of cars running now are BS 4 compliant but from 2020 bs 6 compliant vehicle could be sold only. so either companies change engines and bodies or discontinue old models and launch new ones.
