CNG Queries, Myths, Facts with Impact on Car Engine

Been CNG emerging as popular alternative against Diesel and even Petrol with the fact that running cost in CNG is lowest across all category of Fuel in India

Know various Queries answered about CNG Kits

Q, What is CNG

CNG is compressed natural gas and and Unlike petrol there is no carbon produced and even there is negligible smoke as against Diesel Engines.

As its methane - and for some vehicle owners who fear of smell of gas in car, its a myth as its important to note that CNG is odorless (due to primarily methane)

Its a clean fuel and considered a fuel with lesser carbon emission. Government is also promoting in CNG as even in Budget 2018 - Delhi Government proposed 50% rebate in road tax slabs (which is yet to be approved), Mumbai also has lower road tax at 7% for CNG Cars

Q. Is CNG Compatible with Modern age Cars

Yes - Sequential CNG Kits are recommended with all Modern age Petrol Cars with Naturally aspirated Engine (without Turbo)

Infact - if some one find an expert retro fit center and does with precision then even can be used in Petrol cars with Turbocharger. With device like Timing Advancer - one can address in Power loss issue and improve the acceleration output even.

But - for hassle free ownership - its very important to go only with Original CNG Kits from Reputed Government Authorized Fitment center (repeating Original as counterfeit Kits are also available)

Q. How much running can one do in CNG

Been the CNG Cylinder size as used in cars is around 12 Kg and has around 80% capacity utilization. One can cover in around 200 Kms - 220 Kms using a CNG Car

Been CNG Cars has generally 25% better fuel efficiency than petrol, So if in Petrol your car gets mileage of say 13 Kmpl, can expect in 17 Km/kg in CNG. Effectively means Petrol price is say 73 per litre means rs 5.5 per Km in Petrol. In CNG running cost would just be half as CNG cost is 40 rs per Kg means Rs 2.5 / Km in CNG

Q. Many people are of opinion that CNG is not Safe for Cars

Answer is CNG is even lighter than air, and thus in case of small leakage - this will disemminate in air. Also - chances of fire is low as CNG Flash point temperature is very high

But yes CNG Kit can catch fire - when the CNG Kit is duplicate, unauthorized, full leakage, much higher pressure then this is like inviting Fire. Even a regular testing is recommended every 3rd year and if one does not follow same - then it can cause in risk

Q. Can CNG Can negatively impact in Engine

CNG is a dry fuel and if used CNG only as medium of drive on daily basis without using petrol can impact in Injector. Its recommended that CNG should get Automatic change over only after the car driven on Petrol for Initial 2 to 3 Kms

If one try to start on CNG or shift to CNG within 2 Kms then yes this can impact in Injectors on Medium to Longer term

On Longer term - CNG Kit needs to be thoroughly inspected once every 3 year as mandated by law. Also

» Air Filter (if cleaned every 5000 and replaced at 10K Kms)

» Spark Plug - (if replaced by 15K to max 20K Kms) -

» Schedule adopted for Engine Oil Change and Filter cartridge -

» CNG cartridge changed as per recommended schedule -

then one can expect long lasting performance. Infact CNG is Light and has higher Octane and it helps in actually reducing Noise and Vibration Level of Car - so your car NVH Levels will actually be lower

Q. What are Negative Impact of CNG

1. Gain weight due to cylinder, entire kit, fitment - almost 70kg to 80 kg weight increased due to cng kit. Been the weight of the car increased, power performance slips by almost 15%. Your car will feel marginally lethargic especially the difference is observant when one needs pickup or with AC on and the car fully loaded

2. Boot Space turns out to be impractical, almost no boot

3. Driving a Car on low CNG reduces the CNG pressure and can impact in CNG Valve

4. Warranty on New Car will be void

Q. What in Check Engine Light Problem in CNG Car

Check Engine Light is a common issue and most of the owners in CNG Faced the issue

1. Been the injectors are not lubricated - CNG is essentially a dry fuel as against petrol which is ofcourse in liquid form. Thus the injectors need lubrication - one need to drive in atleast 2 kms on CNG at time of starting car and should not manually switch to CNG Mode.

2CNG Wiring issue

3. CNG Fitment not done properly

4. Unauthorized CNG Kit used or Fitment not done with Precision

Q. Is CNG Recommended in Modern Age Cars

Depending on Fact of average running and that you will have to compromise with Boot Space and slight sluggish performance.

Also as maximum running is around 200 Kms (for cars like Wagon R, Celerio, Grand i10) in CNG - if one has running in range of upto 50 Kms a day then can go for CNG

Else for higher running - Diesel is what recommended, reason is else like if one drives in say 70 Kms a day - then he will have to run to Fuel Station almost every 3rd day (means 10 times a month) - which can be slight cumbersome.
