BS6 Petrol Diesel Fuel Impact on Older BS4, BS3 Car Engines in India

BS6 Petrol Diesel Fuel Impact on Older BS4, BS3 Car Engines in India

With Government Proposing BS6 Fuel from April 2018, know how is BS6 Fuel going to Impact in Older Cars having BS4, BS3 Compliant Engines in India

BS6 Fuel in India

Concerning Pollution levels, Ministry of Petroleum and OMC Companies are ready to introduce in BS 6 Grade Fuel (Petrol and Diesel) from April 2018 onwards

A car emits harmful pollutants as NOX, Carbon Monoxide and Pm2.5, PM10 Pollutants based on its Transmission System, Engine design based on Emission Standard. Having a cleaner fuel in a BS6 Compliant car will give much lower pollution.

While BS-6 Compliant Fuel will be available in Delhi from 1st April 2018 and PAN India by 1st April 2019 as per latest Press Release. But- This is slight a concern for Cars which are still running on BS-3 and BS-4 Cars

» Auto Manufacturers are stating that they are not in a position to change Technology to BS-6 Compliance in as soon as April 2018

» Also, As per SIAM Spokesperson – the Roadmap plan is given of April 2020 and the same is communicated to OEM which have planned to roll out vehicles accordingly. Preponing the same by 2 years would not be feasible on same

Challenges as stated by Auto Manufacture

» Passenger Car Manufacturers have to update the Transmission System and perform necessary changes in Engine. As per estimated calculation shared in - The Entire R&D and transmission system changes going to increase costing of car by rs 40K to 50K in Hatchback Segment having 1 Litre to 1.2 Litre Engine. While the hike to be slight higher for SUV and Sedan Cars in 1.5 Litre and 2 Litre

» Launching in Planned phase is also criticized as car buyers in Delhi who will go outstation trips in between April 2018 to March 2019 will get BS-4 Fuel instead of BS-6 Fuel.

Been BS 6 is a clean fuel which in a BS 6 Compliant car can make pollution as lower such in such a way that the NOX Levels as emitted would be reduced :-

3 BS6 Cars = 1 BS4 Car

6 BS6 Cars = 1 BS3 Car

Emission Norm standard - Petrol Cars
Nox  (milligram/km) PM  (milligram/km)
BS 3 150 NA
BS 4 80 NA
BS 6 (estimated) 60 5

Emission Norm standard - Diesel Cars
Nox  (milligram/km) PM  (milligram/km)
BS 3 500 50
BS 4 250 25
BS 6 (estimated) 80 5

Estimated NOX and Particulate based on Different Fuel Type Emissions

Impact of BS VI Fuel on Cars with BS IV or BSIII or even Older BSII Compliance

Its important to know that the Base of Petroleum Product Crude Oil. The Oil is processed and cleaned in refineries and been marketed by Oil Marketing Companies.

One of the key component of End Processed Fuel is Sulphur which is what key responsible for Emissions including PM 2.5 and PM 10 Particulate Material. But - Sulphur has certain advantage too as it provides much needed lubrication to Fuel Injectors, Fuel Pump

Importantly Diesel Cars are known for much to required relatively much higher Sulphur Level vis a vis Petrol Cars, and thus the Diesel Fuel as supplied in matched to BS-4 grade has relative Sulphur content.

Sulphur content in a BS2 Fuel used to be 500 ppm, which was reduced to BS3 Fuel is 150 ppm, while in BS4 Fuel is 50 ppm and going to be reduced to 10 ppm in proposed BS6 Fuel.

Petrol Cars are Spark Ignited (having Spark Plug) – means air and Fuel is pre-mixed and turned on with a spark, while Diesel Cars have Fuel Injectors which is compression ignited through combustion in by having compressed air-fuel mix

Now Diesel Engines are designed as such that Fuel Injectors in Diesel engine injects right among of Fuel Pressure in Combustion chamber basis engine speed. Been these Fuel Injectors are of utmost importance – the Sulphur in Diesel Fuel acts as lubricant and the Older Engines are Designed in such a way that this lubricant in Sulphur is essential for long life of Diesel Engine

Now as per update - although BS-6 Fuel going to be Ultra Low Sulphur Fuel - but the final Lubrication properties will still be maintained as per report update

So – the BS-6 Regime not going to Impact in Older BS-4 Cars

Impact of BS-IV Fuel on BS-6 Car

BS-VI Engines will be designed to take Cleaner fuel, having a fuel with higher Impurity including Higher Sulphur levels will mean Clogged up DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). With Filter getting blocked, the fuel injected will be higher in Diesel Engine causing low Mileage issue and Performance issue with the car.

BS6 Diesel Cars will be much better to drive, if fuelled with a BS6 Compliant Fuel. So could be an issue if Fuel is not available outside Delhi. What if the car has to be take to Outstation Trips.

BS6 Engines needs cleaner fuel, and making Fuel tank fill with BS4 Compliant Fuel can turn up to be a problem with Car Mechanical System. Thus BS-6 Cars are not compliant with BS-4 Fuel
