Tata Nexon Official Review: Positives and Negatives of Tata Nexon

Tata Nexon Petrol and Diesel Performance Official Review with Interiors, Safety, Build Quality, Features, Drive, Handling, Mileage, Ownership Cost of Nexon

Tata Nexon Review

Tata Nexon is the Futuristic Design Model from Tata Motors - for Buyers looking for

» Differentiating Styling

» Features, Looks

» Top Notch Suspension

» SUV Like Commanding Seating position

» Good Drive-ability, Performance

Here is Brief Review of Tata Nexon

Engine Performance

» Tata Nexon Petrol: Despite 1.2 Litre Petrol Engine coming with Turbocharger, there is absolute no turbo lag. This car has linear Pickup. The Car is best to drive in Sports Mode and not in Economy Mode,  City Mode. Considering sports characterstic – its best to drive Nexon only in Sports Mode to enjoy the vehicle

Having said same – Nexon been 1.2 Litre Petrol with 110 PS Power and 170 NM Torque as otherwise though of explosive Petrol Engine does not match in real world performance. Its Power Delivery is Linear and feel acceptable good enough – but not as peppy. Steering Dynamics are acceptable too. Suspension has been strength of Tata Motors

Overall nothing extra-ordinary in drive as otherwise presumed due to 110 PS Power and 170 NM Torque

» Tata Nexon Diesel : Tata Nexon Diesel again on Papers in 1.5 Litre Diesel engine with 110 PS Power and 260 NM Torque feels the most Powerful Sub 4 Meter Car in Indian Market. But – when drive on real life conditions – again the car feels refined and linear – on lines of Petrol Engine there is no Pep. This car if expected to cheer in excitement of face of enthusiast lover can be mistaken. Its Performance very linear. Although the good thing is that there is no Turbo lag which otherwise as seen in Maruti Vitara Brezza. Suspension can absorb in bad patch roads at ease. Nexon is best to drive on Sports Mode

» Mileage, Maintenance: If Driven in Sports Mode as where Nexon is best to drive in - expect the mileage to be relatively lower. The Maintenance Cost of Nexon can be known through this post on Nexon Maintenance

Interiors, Exteriors, Space

» Seating, Ergonomics, Drive – As what observed, the Ingress for Taller Passenger (5'11") on Driver Seat may touch in head on the door line (unless the driver side seat is placed lower). So relatively a downside for any Tall Driver looking for Ease of Ingress if he prefer a raised seating.

The Seats are well cushioned, Comfortable with Good View of the road. The Pillars do not create any such blind spot. Overall a good view of the car. However - Not the best in drive as Clutch seems too close to Foot Rest. Steering feels good to hold, but nothing extra ordinary in reach. Body roll on cornering is evident due to raised ground clearance

» Looks & Styling: Front Fascia, Relative Smaller Height, Tail Looks gives a feel of Bolt Crossover which is made more stylish through Bigger More Stylish Alloys, Eyebrow like LED DRL along with Option of Contrast Roof wrap in Top End Model. Overall for those looking for more Macho SUV Character of the car, Taller Looks may be disappointed with it

But for buyers looking for something as differentiation in Styling from Premium Hatch, Compact Sedan with Raised Ground clearance, Styling can prefer Nexon

» Space: The Space in Nexon as expected in terms of Legroom is acceptable. But Headroom Space seems slight limited. Even Rear Seat Shoulder room Space is slight tight making car good for 4 Adults. The Boot Space is acceptable at 350 Litre as expected from Sub 4 Meter Car. Only the Top End XZ Variant comes with 60:40 Split Rear Seat

» Build Quality, Fit, Finish: This looks Top Notch. The Door Panel look Sturdy and even the body build seems well good enough for the car. The Fit, Finish of the Car is well to premium level. Eye Shaped LED DRL, Projector Headlight, LED Tai Light, Stylish Alloy Wheel, Chrome Lining, Shark Finn Antenna. With Safety Features as Standard right from Base Model and Top End XZ Plus comes with host of Styling add ons – the car certainly can be on radar of buyers looking for Urban Crossover

» Interior Aesthetics: Its Spot on especially if Top End XZ Model with Floating infotainment System, Stylish Instrument Cluster, Premium Fit and Finish in Interior, Piano Black on Center Console. First Impression in Interior is very positive of the car. A small con is the Display on Touchscreen, while the Harman Floating Infotainment system gives feel of Luxury Car like Audi, BMW but on display clarity feels average. The resolution and pixel is strict average.

» Variants: Considering Features – although its good to see that Nexon comes with ABS, EBD, Dual Airbags as standard right from Base Model.  it seems that maximum Styling and Features are restricted in Top End Nexon XZ Plus

Some Misses – the basics like ORVM and Door Handles are Body Colored only in XT and XZ Plus. Its surprising that XM Model is devoid of such basic.

Still Considering features – for anyone looking to buy Nexon – the best Value Buy Variant is Nexon XM and XZ Plus. The XE Model is bare basic and XT additional features over XM (Auto Climate Control, Power Fold ORVM, Rear AC Vent, Cooled Glove Box, Body Colored ORVM, Door Handle, Shark Finn Antenna, Roof Rail) does not justify the price differential of Rs 1 Lakh On Road

Final Recommendation

Go for Tata Nexon as Urban Crossover where requirement of Spacious Car for 4 Adults, Differentiation appeal against regular Hatchback, Compact Sedan with Excellent Build, Suspension, Lag Free Drive, Good Visibility on Road

However – where requirement of Punchiness with Excited Drive with Top Notch Steering Dynamics, SUV Stance appeal, Macho Looks, Space for 5 Adults, Excellent Infotainment experience, Top Notch Mileage – you may be disappointed with Nexon

See the floating Touchscreen - Resembles very close to what seen as in Luxury Cars like Audi, BMW

Hello Gagan,
Thanks, the detailed review is worth. Can you please also help me come to a conclusion?
- We are a family of 5.
- Looking for SAFE, comfortable (also to consider maintenance issues) and of course economic vehicle.
- With 2 quite elderly persons in family a vehicle with too high or too low ground clearance is not feasible.
- We will hardly be on long routes. In fact 50 Km. (in city) a day would be an average.
What can be the cheapest option available considering all above factors please?
Nexon looks cheapest, but considering the mileage, cost of maintenance, is it a better option over vitara brezza?

Hello,

Tata Motors is investing a lot in infusing customer satisfaction, Regular trainings, skilled manpower, spare part priority desk with customer escalation programs are been set to not only make existing portfolio successful, but upcoming car launches including planned launches of Electric Car, Mid SUV, Sub Compact Crossover in pipeline.

The Build, Features, Styling has taken Tata Motor car range to whole new level.
Although it would be incorrect to say that Nexon would be the most economical car in maintenance
But - offlate Diesel Cars service cost has increased a lot and considering same with 15000 Kms service interval - Nexon will remain competitive in service cost
You can opt for Gold AMC - which will make service costs at 65 paise per Km till 45000 Kms for 3 years and will cover not only regular service but even wear and tear items. Also can opt for comprehensive extended warranty taking total warranty coverage to 5 years.

Net all - expect Tata to safeguard trust which customer putting in there cars in form of reliability and competitive service cost.

Thanks Gagan for a detailed review.
I am a Maruti enthusiast, but im really fascinated by the overall features of Nexon.
Gagan, could you please let me know if Tata motors is a reliable brand in comparison with Maruti ?
I know After sales service cannot be compared with what Maruti offers (hanks to their 3000+ service centers), but I did read some bad feedback about Tata in this area.
However all those posts were dated back to 2014 - 2015, post that, people have said the service quality and the reliability of tata vehicles itself has improved a lot.
If possible could you Please share your thoughts on this
