Used Car Valuation in 2024

Used Car Market is Dynamic where unlike New Car there is no Fixed Price. Here Price Varies on Number of Factors which influences Valuation Price of Car.

Important factors for both Buyer and Sellers which determines the valuation price of the vehicle.

  • Manufacturing Year of Car: Most Important is to check how old the car is. Remember - For Valuation Perspective its the Car Manufacturing year, and not Registration Year which matters. There can be a scenaro, like of registration year as 2016, as car registered in Jan 2016 but its 2015 Manufactured one - so for Valuation Perspective this car will come in category of 9 yr Old Car in 2024.
  • Physical Condition of Vehicle: Check and Inspect Interiors, Exteriors, Dents, Paint Peel Off, Rusts. Check Door Panels for evenness, Check Bonnet and visually inspect for any damage to body
  • Drive-ability Condition: Any Noise from Engine, Suspension, Underneath, Cornering, Speed Lag, Glitches in Drive-ability and car value erodes substantially.
  • Car Functions: AC Effectiveness, Power Window Function, Central Lock, Steering, Lights, Indicators, Door Locks etc are Working or not.
  • Service History: Is Car Service History Documented on time. Where is car serviced - Authorized Workshop, any recommendation for replacement of Parts
  • Accidental History: Insurance Claims - check NCB Status, Accidental History of Vehicle, Door Panels, Gaps on Body
  • Mileage: How many Kms Driven. If less than 200 Kms a month then its a concern too
  • Vehicle Model in Production: If vehicle Model is discontinued, then the Spare Parts are slight costlier. Even in case of Maruti or Hyundai - for Esteem or Accent - Spares are slight costlier than the existing similar range. Same for other Manufacturer Models too
  • RC Details: 1st Original Owner or 2nd Owner. Do not miss to tally on ID Proof of Buyer with RC. Also check Bank Hypothecation, tally on Insurance Chassis number and RC Chassis number with Imprint of Car Chassis number

Self Valuation of Used Car : Depreciation Calculator

It''s said that the moment car taken out of Showroom as Delivered Car - it loses 5% Value the very same Moment. Yes- its all game of Depreciation in Used Car Assessment

Below is Valuation Grid of Petrol Cars after Factoring Depreciation Part where Depreciation is Deducted on Present Market Price of Car . Yes - it does not matter on Purchase Price of Car, but either

  • Present On Road Price of Similar New Car after all applicable discounts (if still selling in Indian Market)

or

  • Last Recorded Price of Older Generation (if Model New Generation Came)

or

  • A Similar Competition Model Base Variant (if Product Discontinued)

How to Get Better Valuation Price

First Impression:  The First and Foremost. First Impression is Last Impression. Get the Car Cleaned from Interiors, Exteriors Washed with Minor Dents removed, Paint touch up, Add on Perfume, Floor Carpets Cleaned. These Small things can help in jacking up Price to as high as 10K – 15K on Hatch and even 20K – 25K on Sedan Cars.

Remember - No Individual would be much inclined to give you the fair price of the car, what so ever - less driven or highly fuel efficient if the body condition, interiors and exteriors are not good.

Tyre Condition: Tyre Condition matters a lot. If replaced tyres less than 20K Kms or less than 2 yrs – have the bill documented. You can jack up the price by Rs 10K

Vehicle Service History: If Entire Service History is documented with all previous Services were Scheduled on time, you can jack up the resale price to reasonable levels of as high as

> 5% over and above the Fair resale value. (4 to 7 yr Old Petrol, 3 to 5 yr Old Diesel)

> 10% over and above the Fair resale Value  (8 to 12 yr Old Petrol, 6 to 8 yr Old Diesel)

Wear & Tear Items : Matters highly especially to Individual Buyers – if Clutch Overhaul,  Brake Pads, AC Servicing, Suspension related Work, Drive Belts, Battery etc were replaced in last 10K – 15K Kms or less than 2 yr whichever earlier – do highlight. Highlight the niggle free work for buyer.

It would help in negotiating the price value with an edge to Seller

@ Laxman Pednekar
2012 WR is a Pre Facelift Model. WR got a facelift in Jan '13
> Whats the condition of Tyres - has it been replaced ? If not, Tyre Life is at best 50K Kms - so will cost a sum to you
> Are you able to check Service History ? Is it all serviced from Authorized MS Workshop
> Any Wear & Tear Items like - Clutch Plate, Brake Pads - whether have they been changed, any major repairs ?

With 55,000 Kms on mileage - if car is excellent and well maintained - considering discounts and pre facelift version - price should be in range of rs. 2.5 to 2.6 Lakh
But as you buying from dealer - so he will retain his margin and cut over and above the fair price. May negotiate accordingly.

I have a fluidic verna 2014 model with a odometer run of 9000kms. It met with a accident recently where the airbags were deployed. Its a april production car and its the optional model of diesel variant(sxo). It has all the bells n whistles of hyundai plus additional safety of 6 airbags. Only the front airbags had deployed in the accident. It was repaired in an authorized service center of hyundai and i have all the claim proofs. What price i can expect if i want to sell it now.
P.S- the accident was not as severe as i had no damage to the engine or even the radiator.

Would be difficult to make an estimate about the price in case of accidental vehicles

But yes Valuation does gets erorded - on practical node - there are few buyers who would choose to go in for an accidental car, unless the price drop is significant, or if you choose to go to a used car dealer or in exchange of car with a car dealer - Not to dishearten you - but on real life scenario - Valuation price can diminish by upto 1/3rd of the fair value of the vehicle in case of accidental vehicles.

However - as mentioned the impact was not severe and there is no impact on Engine / Radiator - you can still claim and negotiate a good price by finding a right buyer for your car with at best value erosion in range of 15% max - i.e. a Lakh or rs.
