IMT Review as what used in Venue, Sonet. Untold Reality of IMT

IMT Manual Transmission Review where used without Clutch Pedal in Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet. Top 5 things need to know about IMT Car

IMT Review - Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet

IMT is what can possibly turn as revolution in Indian Passenger Car Market

To deliver convenience to customers - Hyundai India and Kia Motors bought in Intelligent Manual Transmission which is what a definite boon over conventional manual transmission, It works on simple concept where an actuator device is added and sensor appended to gear shift. Whenever Driver put his hand on gear and attempt to move

  • This Actuator will sense this from Ecu and within 1/10th of fraction of second presses clutch
  • Driver in meanwhile can change gear seamlessly.

Also has what like a creep mode and car wont stall unlike what it happens in a Manual Transmission. This Transmission is derived for those vehicle owners who seek

  • Convenience from pressing clutch manually
  • Who think that they may otherwise stall in Manual Transmission car - which does not happen in IMT
  • Comes with Creep Mode, where on engaging on 1st Gear - without any accelerator pedal response, car will move to speed of 6 to 7 Kmph. So in heavy traffic condition turns very convenient to only apply brake and move on

Some Important Facts about IMT Transmission

  • IMT Cars Mechanism is what like any other Manual Transmission cars with same Gear Stick and yes it do come with Clutch but without any Clutch Pedal for offering convenience to driver
  • Rather than the driving pressing clutch, an actuator device is what added which what press in clutch through sensor placed on Gear Lever
  • You can Change gear while keeping right foot on Accelerator or not. Its fine, but remember never ever use Brakes simultaneously while doing gear shift changes. Means, say you on 4th Gear and suddenly you want to slow down - best to use brakes to reduce speed and later on change gear to 1st or 2nd Gear. It would be an incorrect practice to apply brakes and simultaneously change gear.
  • Clutch Actuator Fluid replacement at around 20,000 kms is the only additional maintenance which will be over and above a regular Manual Transmission Car Maintenance
  • Avoid resting left hand on Gear Stick. Its not good in Manual Transmission and further not at all recommended in IMT Cars where possibility of clutch been engaged is higher.

Risk and Important Guideline about Driving an IMT Car - Reliability of IMT Transmission

Only thing is that driver needs to have learning curve for the car, where should change in gear as per what at required speed as otherwise

  • Driving car at very low rpm - say driving at speed of 30 Kmph on 6th gear (although will hear beep if you come down to under 30 Kmph speed)
  • Driving car at very high rpm say driving at speed of 80 Kmph on 3rd Gear
  • Maintain same gear for a wide speed range say 4th gear from speed of 20 to 80 Speed level

will only strain in car engine, low mileage and excessive high rpm or low rpm will lead to wear & tear of flywheel and other Engine Components. Do note that Venue and Sonet comes in Turbo Charged Petrol Engine and Clutch Replacement along with Flywheel would definite be an expensive proposition

So as long as driver take it to learning curve to change gear as per recommended speed then its a near perfect technology for them. But if you are someone or some one in family who will

  • Abuse the system by not following Gear Shift Movements at recommended speed
  • By casualness, maintain the same gear for Wide Speed Range

then this would certainly cost a slight higher expense in terms of Ownership cost Factor been end Mileage would be lower and wear and tear of parts can cause in impacting Clutch Assembly including Flywheel.

Specific to Venue IMT, Sonet IMT

You will love in the Convenience Factor as whats there in IMT Car and best of it there is no pause effect or jerk effect as otherwise what used to be seen in AMT Cars in recent past but from a pure enthusiast perspective, do note that

  • IMT Cars, despite of driver controlling speed and gear shift can end up to be marginally slower than what a regular Manual Transmission car will feel
  • Somehow not felt as smooth Gear Shift as what else in Manual Transmission but no complaints still

Rest all - considering Price Point, Convenience, Jerk free drive and the way IMT is designed in Turbo Petrol Engine - am sure will love in Venue IMT and Sonet IMT

Have a test drive, would love in these Cars !!

Sir i have doubts

1. Will car cut off while collision.

2. In case of emergency how to stop car say if break fails or smoke appears in dashboard other thn push button as we dont have clutch.

3. In case of short circuit or any other fire related issue amd if we stuck in car for some reason will car cut off if not isent it a major issue as car is on and fuel supply is on it may blast.....

In short what r the safety issues in imt as we don have option to shut off engine only puch button........ as we have option to shut off engine by just removing leg from clutch paddle
