Used Car Valuation

Important factors for both Buyer and Sellers which determines the valuation price of the vehicle.

» Physical Condition of Vehicle: Check and Inspect Interiors, Exteriors, Dents, Paint Peel Off, Rusts

» Drive-ability Condition: Any Noise from Engine, Suspension, Underneath, Cornering, Speed Lag, Glitches in Drive-ability and car value erodes substantially.

» Car Functions: AC, Power Window, Central Lock, Steering, Lights, Indicators, Door Locks etc

» Service History: Are all Scheduled Servicing done on time. Is Authorized Workshop Bills documented

» Accidental History: Insurance Claims - check NCB, Accidental History of Vehicle, Door Panels, Gaps on Body

» Mileage: How many Kms Driven. If less than 200 Kms a month then its a concern too

» Vehicle Model in Production: If vehicle Model is discontinued, then the Spare Parts are slight costlier. Even in case of Maruti or Hyundai - for Esteem or Accent - Spares are slight costlier than the existing similar range. Same for other Manufacturer Models too

» RC Details: 1st Original Owner or 2nd Owner. Do not miss to tally on ID Proof of Buyer with RC. Also check Bank Hypothecation, tally on Insurance Chassis number and RC Chassis number with Imprint of Car Chassis number

How to Get Better Valuation Price

First Impression:  The First and Foremost. First Impression is Last Impression. Get the Car Cleaned from Interiors, Exteriors Washed with Minor Dents removed, Paint touch up, Add on Perfume, Floor Carpets Cleaned. These Small things can help in jacking up Price to as high as 10K – 15K on Hatch and even 20K – 25K on Sedan Cars.

Remember - No Individual would be much inclined to give you the fair price of the car, what so ever - less driven or highly fuel efficient if the body condition, interiors and exteriors are not good.

Tyre Condition: Tyre Condition matters a lot. If replaced tyres less than 20K Kms or less than 2 yrs – have the bill documented. You can jack up the price by Rs 10K

Vehicle Service History: If Entire Service History is documented with all previous Services were Scheduled on time, you can jack up the resale price to reasonable levels of as high as

> 5% over and above the Fair resale value. (4 to 7 yr OId Petrol, 3 to 5 yr Old Diesel)

> 10% over and above the Fair resale Value  (8 to 12 yr Old Petrol, 6 to 8 yr Old Diesel)

Wear & Tear Items : Matters highly especially to Individual Buyers – if Clutch Overhaul,  Brake Pads, AC Servicing, Suspension related Work, Drive Belts, Battery etc were replaced in last 10K – 15K Kms or less than 2 yr whichever earlier – do highlight. Highlight the niggle free work for buyer.

It would help in negotiating the price value with an edge to Seller

This is rather a very helpful guide for used car valuations. It is absolutely important to evaluate your car well before going for a sale, because you might not know how much you have to go down on the price to negotiate. So knowing your car’s worth before making a transaction always minimises your chances of losing money. And I loved what you said about the car’s first impression being the last impression. It is absolutely right. Many people fail to realise it and once they feel that a car is no longer serving the purpose, they just wish to sell it in absolutely any godforsaken condition.

This is sure to never yield good money and if they give a minimum effort to adorn the car in a way that you so aptly described, like – changing the floor carpet, washing exteriors, removing minor dents, painting and polishing the car, adding perfume to the car to make it pleasant in entirety, they can make a better sale. I feel all this is very necessary and in fact I had advised a friend of mine to do the same as she was going for a sale by and it did hike the price of the car.

What studying about cars have taught me that along with factors like brand names and vehicle conditions in consideration, season and location also play a vital role and must be taken into account for used car valuation. During the spring and the summer months, convertibles sell for a higher price. As temperatures rise, the demand for classics, roadsters, and sports cars goes up, while autumn and winter make 4x4s, off-roaders and SUVs more attractive. So that is just an added information I felt like sharing.

Hi There Mr. Modi;

besides your name having a popular connotation, this article was much needed and your efforts are applauded. Its commendable to quickly give a precise idea. However the Net on road price calculation and discounts are not readily available. A tool in that area will be great. I will explain it below and look forward to your priceless reflection on precise valuation. (Iam not in the know how to calculate Residual value etc; however I use your chart with a approx net road value calculated on current prices online and value it accordingly. I dont think its precise enough for a self-evaluator and not easy as its in US or Europe. See below;

Iam interested in a EON ERA + of 2012 DECEMBER make, 41500Kms. I have to say that its from a direct seller. Now how did I calculate the price is;

BANGALORE OTR PRICE as of APR 2017 = 3.75 + 55+ 15k = 4.45 lacs
There is a Guess that its DEC discounted car with say 35K; Net OTR = 4.10

So as per your chart 55% value = INR 2.25 lacs .

Now my questions are ;

1) Is this precise calculation ?

2) The 2012 prices have increased of cars by say 30% as of apr 2017; How does that factor in this example?

3) please calculate on this above example a Precise valuation with the car in GOOD CONDITION (No accidents no dents no scratches, service records in ASS in order and regularly maintained- @42k Kms only basic Paid maintenance service needs to be done by Me, a Buyer costing 5500 + 1500 for a Driver belt + 6500 Clutch Plate Assembly mandatory change at 50k Kms which the service guy says is needed)
IDV value for this car shows roughly as 1.50 lacs, (online)

4) If I buy at a cost of 2.1 lacs is it sensible or i have overpaid as I doubt it?

Your priceless reflection on this comprehensive example will be a great Guide. Your reply on this will be much appreciated.

Hello Abhi,

1. Yes - the tabular sheet works that way and is close indicative price

2. Depreciation is calculated on current prices (and not on original invoice value) and thus is the tabular grid formed so as to make it easy to calculate the indicative value of the car based on common wear & tear and general condition based on ageing. Been - the condition can be different - hence a car with well maintained with service history documented can have 5% to 10% higher value as against the grid, while a car which is poorly maintained can have upto 25% lower value. As you will agree that - accidental cars wont fit in above and thus the only way would be in person inspection and above tabular grid may not work in that case

3. As the car Variant is Era which comes in smaller 12 Inch Tyres and driven 42K Kms and 5 year Old, whats the tyre condition - may likely be at end of 3/4th of its tenure and possibly needs replacement in another 10K to 15K Kms or next 2 years at max. Factoring a part of same and Clutch plate cost and the fact that car is in good condition and Hyundai has one among lower service costs - will rate the price in range of Rs 2 to 2.2 Lakh.
IDV is immaterial as its subject to lot of factors and can be manipulated up and down and is not considered in for valuation perspective

Been the tabular grid generic, we have given opportunity to readers to post question in forum with pictures and more details on the car - so as to get personalized response based on condition and get close best approx valuation price based on the details provided
Hope should help !!

Are you Kidding?!

Of course Its been of GREAT HELP and foremost its reassuring. I fail to comprehend why Indian Pre-owned Stakeholders lack basic sense of ethics and complicate matters unnecessarily by ripping few people for short gains instead of credible and reliable good in long term.

I yearn to add to the Qualitative valuation furthermore and request you to enlighten or make a categorical article.

1 - You did factor in quiet similar to my cost of 2.1 (your range was 2 - 2.2) but you have tentatively figured factoring the Good Condition Cost + factoring 25% life of Tyres left+ Clutch assembly service and Replacement costing. It will be of help to know how you factor these costs in numbers or is there a way to assess the same.

2 - Most importantly its quiet, or I must say unethical or unwise for Car companies or the Auto industry to not have the past ON ROAD prices reflected anywhere at all. I only guessed the EX Showroom prices of EON ERA has increased substantially by 30% from your article. This is helpful in spite of factoring DEPRECIATION based on current prices. Iam sure you know the reasons why AUTO manufacturers do not share the past years EX & OTR prices. Hyundai increased about 1lac on EON prices since JAN 2017 owing to Input Cost Inflation.
The Main Question then is - Doesn't this heavily affect the New buyer like me in 2017?
Please enlighten us here on why this is done?
For Ex : the EX of 2012 Dec is approx 2.64 Lax (30% of current 3,76Lax)

3 - Its important for me in this case as I will be re-registering in TAMIL NADU and new state requires 10% as tax from the original Invoice Value of EX-Showroom. Kindly let me know what would have been the COST break-up of this EON ERA + in 2012 ? Also what will be the Refund (Road Tax + anything else) from the originating RTO after I show the new Registered papers? (Originating RTO Cost in 2012 Dec, Bangalore = INR 54,400)

4 - Besides this the discounts are needed to be factored into the current OTR price which your article had clearly stated (see Used car valuation grid). However most Sellers Hide the fact or never enlighten Buyers on the same. What is the prudent way to get around this. Will the argument of DECEMBER year end Offers alone hold good stead?

Factoring many aspects 2.1 lakh INR, i feel, is slightly on the Top-End of the Cost Slab for me without bargaining. However I need Solid reasoning to bring down My offer price most Convincingly so that the Seller finds it reasonable and agrees to my argument in lowering to around 1.9 Lakh INR. What are the ways do you suggest, besides the factoring of Tyres & Clutch Ass servicing.

Much Appreciated of your quick revert which I didn't expect honestly & hope this wasn't Blab as most people would see it as.

Regards
A

I had approached a dealer for Swift VDI 2010 BS IV model which has run 28000 kms. Cost quoted by the dealer after negotiation is 450000/-.

Pls advise if this is worth to buy and the review on this model.

My friend wants to sell his white color, 1st Owner A-Star (Automatic with ABS) Sept-2013 model done about 11,000 kms on ODO, with upto-date comprehensive insurance, and is still under warranty Plus extended warranty till 2017. He has also put in Art Leather (rexine) seat cover and remote keyless entry.There is small dent with chipping of paint on the back wheel arch. Tyres have normal wear and tear. Otherwise he has maintained it well.

He wants to sell it, Urgently. What is the rate he can expect or quote if he wants to sell. Please consider all the above details and suggest the fair price.

NOTE: A-Star production is stopped and replaced by Celerio.

Please revert ASAP.
