Find Car Manufacturing Date (Month, Year) through VIN Chassis Number

Are you looking to Buy a 2018 Manufactured Car ?

Wondering - whether the dealer will sell you 2018 make or 2017 Make car. Here's an Easy way to find and decode manufacturing year of Car through VIN Chassis Number

Alphabetical Meaning: For Instance 10th Letter of Chassis Number Denotes Year of Manufacturing for Hyundai / Honda / Renault etc. If its J - it depicts 2018 Manufactured Car and if H will represent 2017.

Series Alphabet Manufacturing Year   Series Manufacturing Month
J 2018   A or 1 January
H 2017   B or 2 February
G 2016   C or 3 March
F 2015   D or 4 April
E 2014   E or 5 May
D 2013   F or 6 June
C 2012   G or 7 July
B 2011   H or 8 August
2010    J or 9 (I is skipped and not mentioned by Auto Makers) September
      K (except Renault, Nissan) October
      (except Renault, Nissan, Tata) November
      (except Renault, Nissan, Tata) December

Important For Renault, Nissan Car Buyers - They Follow Numeric Series for Month. However - for October to December - October is denoted by A, November by B, December by C.

Important for Tata Motor New Gen Car Owners - They have different Series for Month, explained underneath in the post

Find Manufacturing Year
 (Decode Details)

Look for 10th Digit of VIN Chassis Number with below Car Makers. It would be either J or H (if trying to decode in 2018 Manufacturing Car (J) or 2017 Manufacturing Car (H) )

1) Hyundai - Eon, i10, Grand i10, Xcent, Elite I20, I20 Active, Fluidic Verna, Creta, Elantra, Tucson, Santa Fe, Sonata

2) Nissan Motors & Datsun India - Datsun Redi Go, Go, Go Plus, Redi Go, Micra Active, Micra, Sunny, Terrano

3) Tata Motors - Indica Ev2, Tiago, Tigor, Bolt, Zest, Nexon, Safari Storme, Hexa

4) Honda Cars - Brio, Amaze, Jazz, WRV, BRV, Mobilio, City, CRV

5) Volkswagen & Skoda India - Polo, Vento, Ameo, Jetta, Rapid, Octavia, Kodiaq, Passat, Tiguan

6) Renault India - Kwid, Pulse, Scala, Duster, Fluence

7) Mahindra & Mahindra - KUV100, Verito, TUV300, Xylo, Scorpio, XUV500, Rexton

8) Maruti Suzuki Nexa Series (Ignis, Baleno, S Cross, Ciaz), New Dzire, Brezza - If 10th and 11th Characters are Zero or 11, then check Engine bay for last 2 VIN Digits after 17th Digit x sign. Last Digit indicates Year of Make.

9) Maruti Suzuki Other Cars  - Maruti Suzuki also using in 10th Digit for finding Manufacturing Year in New Dzire, Brezza, Ertiga. As per updates, this 10th Digit will also help in finding in Manufacturing year of Entry Segment Cars too. Only in case where 10th Digit and 11th Digit are 00 or 11 - then you have to check engine bay for last 2 VIN Digits after 17th Digit x sign, refer point number 13

Note: Toyota, Ford, Other Maruti Suzuki Regular Cars and Chevrolet are Exceptions out here.

10) In General Motors (Chevrolet India), the 9th letter denotes the Year of Make  - Spark, Beat, Sail Hatch, Sail Sedan, Enjoy, Tavera

11) In Toyota: Etios, Altis, Innova, Fortuner: its a 21 Digit VIN a combination of 20th n 21st Letter (in Numeric Terms) makes up for the manufacturing year. Like 11 for 2011, 12 for 2012 and 13 for 2013, 14 for 2014 and same way 18 for 2018.

12) In Ford: Figo, Aspire, Ecosport, Endeavour 11th Letter will denote year of Manufacture.

13) For Maruti Suzuki (If 10th and 11th Digit are 00 or 11 then you have to follow this) - The Vin / chassis number pattern given by Maruti dealers or shown on RC is uptill 17 digits. For getting the additional last digits - Open the Bonet, look at the extreme end, below wiper under the bonet - There you can see Complete VIN Number of 21 Digits including Special Character $ and last 2 digits

The Pattern -  You will find Chasis Number - Prefixed by a $  ...17 digit Chasis Number..... $ Last 2 Digits

The Last Digit in it represents the Manufacturing Year. If its G - 2016, F - its 2015. If D - its 2014

For ex : $MA3EYD32S00700400$AG - So Here Last Digit is G - Which means year of Manufacturing is 2016. A represents month - so Jan 2016 Manufacturing would have in AG as the last characters

Here's Picture for Finding Chassis Number for Maruti Suzuki Cars so as to Decode Manufacturing Year. Applicable on Entire Range - Alto 800, Alto K10, Wagon R, Celerio, Stingray, Ritz, Swift, Baleno, Swift Dzire, Ertiga, Ciaz, S Cross

If 10th Letter is 'D', its a 2013 make, else if its 'E' - its as 2014 Make
or ask dealer a copy of Form 21 i.e Sale Certificate - it mandatory to capture Month & Year of Manufacture of Vehicle in it.

Hi Gagan,

I have purchased Ertiga, received a message from RTO with VIN and car number. Found one of the characters of the VIN incorrect. It is the 4th character. Verified with the vin number near the engine bay (MA3Fxxxx) the 4th character is not matching with one I received through SMS (MA3Rxxxx) from RTO. Will it create problems for me in future. Shall I get it changed from dealer. Please help

Hello Richard,

Regret delay in reply - yes - you should get it changed and get correct one updated in RC
Think of this way -
> Insurance Policy has different Engine Number and RC Book will have different engine number - whenever you will sell the car - it will be difficult to transfer it
> or even if a claim comes in - Insurance company may hold the claim if Engine Number mis-matches with the engine number of the car

Take the dealer for a ride to get this corrected on asap basis... All the best !!

Hi Anand,

I contacted customer care but they were not able to tell me properly. They asked me to send the VIN number through mail but I didn't do. For your confirmation you can check the metal label in the bonnet where you can find the VIN number and at last line you will find manufacturer month and year mine was AD that is Jan 2013, so check for the that. As admin said 7th and 9th digit are the month and year for Chevy.

Thanks,
Karthik

Hi Gagan Modi,

This is a small clarification regarding Chevy chassis number.. I have booked Chevy Beat Diesel and the chassis number for the same is MA6BFBANDCT051021. As per the post 7 letter is month and 9th letter is year so my car would be Jan 2013. But my question is few sites, they mentioned as 9 is the month and 10th is the Year so am very much confused.

Even in this site http://www.myvehicledetails.com/ when I tried my chassis number it came as 2012 April and when i tried Ayushi (from the above comments) VIN number the output is APRIL 2013 how is this possible..?

Extra info in my car bonnet it is stamped as manufactured date and month as AD which comes as Jan 2013.

Can you please confirm whether which is correct 7&9 or 9&10 for month & Year respectively.
Your input is very valuable Thanks in advance..
